City of Woodburn Recreation and Park Board Minutes November 13, 2012 ● 5:30 p.m. Page 1 of 3 1. CALL TO ORDER The meeting and was called to order at 5:30 p.m. 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Bruce Thomas/ Brent Glogau- Motion to approve the October 9, 2012 minutes as presented. The motion passed unanimously. 4. BUSINESS FROM AUDIENCE 5. OLD BUSINESS 6. NEW BUSINESS Wyffels Park Wetland Restoration Project Dan Brown, Public Works Director, discussed the Wyffels Park Restoration Project he is working on with Pacific University and the STEM program at Woodburn High School. 7. DIVISION REPORTS Aquatics – Kristin Wierenga 1st Quarter financial/ attendance review New janitorial services company will begin next with the goal of achieving higher quality, more cost effective service. Papa Murphy’s sponsorship of free individual pizza cards for swim lesson participants amounts to $20,000 over the past 6 years ---PAGE BREAK--- City of Woodburn Recreation and Park Board Minutes November 13, 2012 ● 5:30 p.m. Page 2 of 3 Recreation – Stu Spence Youth Sports - Pee Wee Soccer and Youth Soccer have concluded. Pee Wee Basketball ends this weekend. We had 29 players this year compared to 45 last year. Trick or Treating - Rain really affected participation, but we still had a very successful event with 70 – 80 families downtown and even more trick or treating around the downtown core. Several businesses reported that they were very busy with trick or treaters. Recreation & Parks has hosted this event since 2009. Program Classes - As discussed last month, Recreation & Parks is planning new Community Education Classes. Classes announced for Winter/Spring include: 1. Puppy Kindergarten – puppy socialization program for dogs 8 to 12 weeks. 5-week session begins January 8th. 2. Ballroom Dancing – introduction to many styles including Salsa, Tango, Waltz, Swing, or Cha Cha. Dance classes begin January 10th. 3. Kids in the Kitchen Cooking Clases – OSU Extension Service plans 3-themed cooking nights (Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and Earth Day snacks). New Family Trips – Also new for Winter/Spring are family trips and tours. Family Trips are designed to offer families discounted rates and transportation to popular regional attractions. Planned trips include: 1. Seaside for the day – February 15th 2. John’s Incredible Pizza – March 28th 3. Oregon Zoo – April 13th Mayor’s Tree Lighting - The annually Mayor’s Tree Lighting at the Plaza will be December 2nd. Festivities begin at the Settlemier House at 5:30pm with a performance by the Dickens Carolers, then a parade down Garfield Street to the Plaza where there will be light refreshments, a youth dance performance, and an appearance by Santa himself. Parks and Facilities – Jim Row Jim presented the Centennial Park traffic count data from the week of October 15- 22, 2012. These counts will be taken quarterly over the next year. 8. At that meeting, the Board will review and discuss the Aquatic Center Expansion project that was proposed in the 2008 Community Centers Feasibility Study. 9. BOARD COMMENTS 10.
