WOODBURN PUBLIC ARTS AND MURALS COMMITTEE MINUTES FROM THE NOVEMBER 14, 2018 MEETING Roll Call: Frank Lonergan-Chair, Merri Berlin, Sharon Schaub, Co-Chair, Kristi St. Amant, Chris Lopez Absent: Sharon Corning, Brenda Valentino-Bravo, Colleen Vancil, Judy Massaia Staff: McKenzie Granum, Jamie Johnk, Chris Kerr Guest: Anthony Veliz • Approval of October 30, 2018 Public Hearing: Sharon S. made a motion to approve; Kristi seconded. Motion passed. • Downtown Plaza Art: Frank shared the correspondence received from committee members unable to attend the meeting Colleen Vancil and Judy Massaia. In addition, Frank shared correspondence received from Mary Beth Cornwell and Anthony Veliz. Mr. Veliz attended and discussed the big picture plan for public art and recommended consideration of a theme, such as Mt. Angel and St. Helens. The Committee discussed and provided feedback regarding the correspondence and Mr. Veliz. The Woodburn Park & Red Board met on 11/13/2018 and staff was asked to provide a brief update on the public art project. Staff shared the maquette of the sculptures and discussed the Committee process for approval. It was also mentioned that a recommendation to locate the art in the Library Park had been presented. The Park Board concluded that they preferred the Plaza as the location of the art as the Library Park has other projects planned. Committee made recommended changes to the maquette as follows: • Dog sculpture: o Replace baseball with a soccer ball • Girl sculpture: o Remove tulips at feet o Add tulip pattern to dress o Add more definition to the hair o Leave on maquette • Boy sculpture: o Remove train at feet o Soften up the face like the drawing (more youthful) o Thin up legs to look more childlike o Hair more tufted like in the drawing o Maquette looks like boy has a “pot belly” scale down ---PAGE BREAK--- WOODBURN TOURISM ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES FROM THE NOVEMBER 14, 2018 PAGE TWO • Water Tower Art: Staff shared the last design concept discussed by the Committee. Committee would like to see more definition in the tulip design. In addition, the Committee would like to develop an outreach strategy for public feedback. Chris Kerr will put together an outline and share it with the Committee. • Selfie Wall: Staff shared the idea of creating the selfie art on vinyl in order to provide a reusable product. Committee recommended that staff reach out to Brenda and discuss concept art. • Other Discussion Items: Frank recognized the members for their efforts on the Public Arts and Mural Committee and shared that this is just the beginning of art in Woodburn. Frank shared that he was appointed to the Committee as a City Council representative and since his role on the Council will be changing as of the December 10, 2018 meeting. Frank moved to nominate Sharon S. as Chair on the Public Arts and Mural Committee; Kristi seconded. Motion passed. A Co-Chair will be nominated at the next Committee meeting. For future consideration, Frank shared an art concept from Councilor Carney for the top of the water fountain. This concept will be reviewed and discussed at a later meeting. • Next Meeting: The next regular Committee meeting is scheduled for December 19, 2018. Staff will send an email out to the Committee to gather a consensus on whether to reschedule or cancel the December meeting. • Adjourned: Franks moved to adjourn the meeting at 11:39; Sharon S. seconded.
