CITY OF WHITEFISH ADOPT-A-TREE COST SHARE PROGRAM Thank you for your interest in becoming a part of an exciting city beautification program through the development of our urban forest! The City of Whitefish has created an Adopt-A-Tree Cost Share program for the purpose of enhancing the tree inventory within our community. The program offers a unique collaboration between the homeowner and the City of Whitefish. The City and property owner will each share 50% of the initial cost of a boulevard tree to be planted by the City of Whitefish. The tree will be properly irrigated by the property owner for the first 3 years of the life of the tree with the water provided solely by the property owner. The City will provide a 20-gallon tree bag for the first 3 years to minimize the efforts in performing this task and to maximize the use of water resources. The water bag will be returned to the City at the end of the three years. Should you wish to participate in the Adopt-A-Tree Program, please complete the application form and return to the City of Whitefish Parks & Recreation Department for review and consideration. Each property will have special circumstances that will need to be considered as to opportunities to plant, locations, limitations, proper tree species & size. Once your application is received, staff will do a site visit to evaluate the location and determine eligibility. City staff will provide a recommendation for the location and type of tree that would be acceptable for that location. Some situations will dictate that only one type of tree may be acceptable for a location, while others may offer more choices. Once eligibility is determined, the Urban Forestry department will contact you to schedule the planting. This program is administered on a first come, first served basis. Trees will be planted in either spring or fall and will be planted by the Urban Forestry staff to meet the specifications of the tree ordinance and accordance with ANSI A300 planting standards. All nursery stock will meet the American Standards for Nursery Stock ANSI Z60.1-2014 standards. Once the tree is planted, it will be the responsibility of the homeowner to properly water the tree using the provided water bag for the first three years. All other maintenance to the tree will be done by the Urban Forestry staff. All trees in the public right-of-way are the property of the City.
