Revised January 28, 2025 Washington County, Georgia Road Department Laborer GENERAL NATURE OF WORK This position performs a variety of tasks including operation of Road Department vehicles and using hand tools to maintain County paved and dirt roads. The work is done under the direct supervision of a Road Department Foreman. This position involves interacting with the general public, heavy physical demands, and exposure to sometimes hazardous materials. This position reports directly to the Road Department Maintenance Foreman. EXAMPLES OF WORK Essential Job Functions: Drives pickups and utility trucks. Operate hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hoes, chain saws, wacker packers, limb saws, lawn mower, weed eater, etc. Additional Job Functions: Perform additional duties as required. DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of materials, equipment, procedures and methods used in road maintenance Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions Ability to communicate effectively verbally with foreman and the public Manual dexterity including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, and feeling. Ability to lift in excess of 20 lbs. of force regularly. Ability to exert in excess of 100 lbs. of force occasionally. Ability to climb on/off vehicles and equipment as needed. Ability to stand for extended periods with only occasional breaks. The work environment is performed outdoors where the employee is exposed to noise, dirt, dust, grease, machinery with moving parts, vibrating equipment, as well as exposure to inclement weather.
