PUBLIC NOTIFICATION PUBLIC NOTIFICATION IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER TTHM VIOLATION AT TTHM VIOLATION AT The The THOMSON-MCDUFFIE CO W&S COMM THOMSON-MCDUFFIE CO W&S COMM Water System Water System Our community water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have the right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation. We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. We have been notified by the State that our water system exceeded the maximum contaminant levels (MCL) for the following: Violation ID Violation ID Compliance Period Compliance Period Site # Site # Analyte Analyte Concentration Concentration MCL MCL TTHM 0.080 mg/L TTHM 0.080 mg/L 501 2023-12946 2023-12947 1Q2023 – 01/01/2023-03/31/2023 1Q2023 – 01/01/2023-03/31/2023 502 0.103 mg/L 0.103 mg/L 2023-12948 What Should I Do? • There is nothing you need to do. You do not need to boil your water or take other corrective actions. However, if you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor. • If you have a severely compromised immune system, have an infant, are pregnant, or are elderly, you may be at increased risk and should seek advice from your health care providers about drinking this water. Some people who drink water containing Trihalomethanes in excess of the MCL over many years, may experience problems with their liver, kidneys, or central nervous system, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer. What Happened? The City of Thomson was notified in June 6, 2023 by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) the level of total trihalomethanes in routine drinking water sampling exceeded permitted levels. As shown above, the samples tested were above the permitted amounts - two samples contained 0.103 mg/L and another 0.083 mg/L where the allowable concentrations are not to exceed 0.080 mg/L. What Is Being Done? In July 2023 the City of Thomson will advertise a request for proposal (RFP) in order to get contractor quotes for a water treatment plant improvement project. Included in the scope of the project are improvements designed specifically to eliminate In the meantime we will continue to take measures - increasing flushing water lines to keep water moving, therefore reducing the formation of - to keep the TTHM levels as low as possible. Our consulting engineers are confident the water treatment plant project will decrease TTHM levels, if not eliminate them altogether. Please note that the reported levels, while over permitted amounts, are only a few of a milligram per liter of water higher than established limits.
