Summit County Citizen’s Guide for Flood Preparation It is vital to take effective action prior to, during and after a flood. This Guide is provided to the citizens of Summit County with information and resources available to take action. Prior to the Flooding Flood Maps It is important to understand flooding risks for your property. You can determine if your property is subject to potential flooding by consulting the attached map or looking at maps on the county website www.co.summit.ut.us. Sandbags Locations for securing sand and bags or filled sandbags are noted on the attached map or on the county’s website. If you are well outside these area and need delivery of sand and unfilled bags outside of these locations call Summit County Public Works at [PHONE REDACTED] Monday‐Thursday 8‐4. Information You can find out potential flood conditions for your area by any of the following: National Weather Service email alerts at www.wrh.noaa.gov/slc/, AllWest Channel 3 on your television, the county website www.co.summit.ut.us. For reporting flooding problems, please call 336.3600. Home Preparation Keep at 72‐hour kit on hand and make sure your vehicles are filled with gas. Keep what you may need to take with you easily available if you have to evacuate. Know where the evacuation centers for your area are by consulting the county website www.co.summit.ut.us. Know the meaning of the terms noted below in the flood warning system and take appropriate action. Site Preparation If flooding is imminent, move valuables and toxic materials to a higher location. Fill bathtubs and sinks with clean water in case regular supplies are contaminated. Place sandbags around the perimeter of home but do not stack the bags against the foundation. Know the Flood Warning System Flood Watch Issued 24‐48 hours before anticipated flooding. Your actions: fill your gas tank, move valuables and toxic materials to a higher location, secure your 72 hour kit where you can find it. Flood Warning Issued about 12 hours before flooding is anticipated .Your actions: stay tuned to radio, websites and television update, monitor conditions in your area but don’t go into flooded areas. During the Flood Monitor your escape route and leave before roads are flooded. If you must evacuate, secure your home, shut off electrical and gas connections, pack your essentials and know where evacuation centers are for your family, domestic pets and livestock. Consult attached map for this information. Don’t drive or walk where there is water the road. If your vehicle stalls abandon it if it is safe to do so and seek higher ground. If you are caught in your house when flooding occurs, move to the second floor or to the roof if necessary. Always keep children and pets away from ditches, culverts, and storm drains and waterways. After the Flood Return home only when officials tell you it is safe to do so. Before entering your home check for structural damage. Check for gas leaks before using appliances. Don’t use food or water that has been exposed to flooding and follow boil water advisories. Do not use water damaged appliances.
