Jurisdiction: Schuyler County Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Revised: June 28, 2004; Reviewed April 5, 2005; Reviewed: June 23, 2011: Updated: June 4, 2020; Updated: December 15, 2021 DEPUTY BUILDING MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Assists in managing the custodial and maintenance activities of County buildings and grounds and acts for and on behalf of the Department Head during his/her absence. This is skilled work of varied and difficult nature that involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of buildings and equipment. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Building Maintenance Supervisor with considerable leeway in the use of independent judgment. The essential nature of the work is such that the incumbent is responsible for the exercise of judgment related to the construction, alteration and maintenance of County buildings, grounds, parking lots, parks and/or other facilities and infrastructures. Supervision is exercised over subordinate cleaning and maintenance employees. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Participates in and supervises the performance of electrical, plumbing, roofing, painting, carpentry, mechanical, masonry and related work for all County facilities; Operates and maintains heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems; Oversees grounds maintenance; Maintains refrigeration and other equipment; Operates and services motor powered tools, equipment and light motor vehicles; Estimates and records time and materials required for repairs; Orders spare parts, cleaning supplies, materials for repairs and tools; Supervises cleaners and other building staff; Participates in training and development of subordinate staff; Does safety training of subordinate staff. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of materials, practices, tools, terminology and safety precautions required for the maintenance of buildings and building equipment; Skill as a general mechanic; Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications; Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; Initiative, resourcefulness; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A. High school graduate or possession of an equivalency diploma plus two years of college with specialization in the building construction trades plus two years experience in the building construction trades, one year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity; or B. Four years of experience in the building construction trades, one year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity. NOTE: Must possess and maintain a valid NYS Drivers License.
