Automotive Mechanic 1 Jurisdiction: Schuyler County Jurisdictional Class: Non-Competitive Adopted: September 21, 1995 Revised: May 22, 2003; Reviewed: June 30, 2011 Revised: August 30, 2021 AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An Automotive Mechanic is responsible for servicing, repairing, and maintaining all of the automotive and other equipment of a civil division. General instructions are received regarding what tasks to perform permitting some leeway for planning the details of each assignment. Does related work as required TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Diagnoses and makes repairs to buses, cars, trucks, tractors, graders, bulldozers, rollers, and other mechanical equipment; Repairs or replaces water pumps, fuel pumps, generators, carburetors, and shock absorbers; Grinds valves and fits new bearings, pistons, and rings; Adjusts connecting rods and bearings; Assembles and times engines; Repairs or overhauls brake systems, clutches, differentials, transmissions, and front and rear axles; May operate electric or acetylene welding and cutting equipment; Repairs starters, lights and ignitions; Adjusts steering mechanisms and aligns wheels; Tunes motors and adjusts carburetors; Occasionally operates machine shop equipment, including lathes, grinders, drill presses and other metal working machines to make and repair parts for automotive equipment; Prepares vehicles for and participates in inspections; Drives buses, cars, trucks and other mechanical equipment as needed; May perform facility and site maintenance as needed; Makes estimates and prepares requisitions for materials; Make emergency roadside (field) repairs and retrievals of buses, cars, trucks and other equipment; Responds to emergency call outs for snow, flood, wind, etc. when necessary. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the terminology, tools and safety precautions of the trade; Skill in performing motor equipment maintenance and repair tasks; Some knowledge of the machinist trade; ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions; Ability to lay out work for self and others; good motor and hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity; ---PAGE BREAK--- Automotive Mechanic 2 Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A. An Associate’s degree or certificate in automotive repair technology or mechanics; OR B. Graduation from a high school technical or vocational program in automotive equipment repair or mechanics and one year of experience in an automotive equipment repair shop performing repair and maintenance of automotive equipment; OR C. Two years of experience as defined in OR D. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of and Special Requirements: Watkins Glen Central School: 1. Must obtain and maintain NYS Class B CDL with Passenger Endorsement during employment. Schuyler County: 1. Possession of a New York State Class B-CDL within six months of being hired; and 2. Eligible for an appropriate New York State Motor Vehicle Inspection License, which must be in possession within six months of appointment.
