Jurisdiction: Schuyler County Jurisdictional Class: Non-Competitive Adopted: June 19, 2009 SUPERINTENDENT OF STREETS, PARKS, AND CEMETERIES DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Leads in the construction and maintenance of Village streets, parks, storm sewer systems, sidewalks, parking lots, and cemeteries. This work requires the supervision of employees in the streets, parks, and cemetery departments. Supervision of this position is received from the Village Board. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Supervises and participates in the construction and maintenance of Village streets, catch basins, and manholes; Supervises excavation, grading, drainage, and embankment projects; Supervises and leads in the patching and repairing of streets; Supervises the cleaning of ditches, culverts, and basins; Plans and directs the cleaning, painting, and maintenance of equipment and real property; Supervises and leads in the striping of streets and parking lots; Supervises the landscaping and trimming of trees related to village street, cemetery, park, and playground areas; Supervises and leads in snow removal and sanding of streets; Supervises the cleaning and sweeping of streets; Supervises the overall operations of the parks department and cemeteries, including the purchase and maintenance of all vehicles and equipment and the construction and maintenance of all buildings; Maintains departmental records; Makes reports to Village Board as required. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of modern street construction and maintenance methods and procedures; Thorough knowledge of the use of road construction and maintenance equipment; Good knowledge of safety standards including PESH and OSHA; Ability to understand and carry into effect blueprints and plans; Ability to organize and supervise the work of others; Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing; Ability to use courtesy and tact with the public; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency; and B. Possession of a valid NYS Class B driver’s license; and C. Five years of responsible experience in the construction and maintenance of roads, of which at least two years involved leading or supervising the work of others. Note: Preference will be given to candidates who live within a 12 mile radius of the Village.
