Police Sergeant 1 Jurisdiction: Schuyler County Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Reviewed: February 18, 2004 POLICE SERGEANT DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for supervising the activities, assigning, inspecting and scheduling the work of the Police Officers assigned to shifts or units. The work is performed under the general supervision of the commissioner and officer in charge. This position differs from the police officer by the responsibility to supervise and assist police officers in handling major law enforcement situations, organize departmental activities and respond to emergency situations. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Supervises police officers’ work activities; Assigns patrol areas, traffic post and department investigations; Handles public concerns including crimes and emergencies; Patrols the municipal boundaries to enforce laws, investigate crimes and arrest violators; Investigates illegal or suspicious activities of persons and quell disturbances; Serves civil papers when required; Oversees and investigates interdepartmental personnel complaints; Performs specialized areas of police work such as Juvenile, Narcotic, Fraud and other major crime investigations; Represents the department while interacting with civic groups or while dealing with other agencies; Prepares department forms and reviews department records and reports associated with law enforcement work; May be assigned responsibility for the supervision and maintenance of departmental equipment; May be assigned responsibility for supervising control over police department buildings, office and related structures. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good working knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of law enforcement; Good working knowledge of the Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Vehicle & Traffic Law, Village Ordinances and Local Laws of the State and Municipality; Working knowledge of the local geography; Good knowledge of the radio equipment and 911 Center operations; Good knowledge of the principles of supervision; Skill in use and operation of firearms and related equipment; Skill in the use of special equipment including radar, breathalyzers, tear gas, batons, and other related equipment; Skilled in the application of first aid; Ability to operate village motor vehicle safely and responsibly; Ability to communicate with the public to solve public concerns; ---PAGE BREAK--- Police Sergeant 2 Ability to organize and oversee large events; Good powers of observation; Ability to follow and communicate written and oral directions; Sound judgment; Tact; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Five years of full-time experience in law enforcement. A minimum of two years of that experience shall have been as a full-time police officer with the Village of Watkins Glen Police Department. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid New York State Drivers License and must be a New York State Certified Police Officer.
