Jurisdiction: Schuyler County Jurisdictional Class: Unclassified if Elected; Non-Competitive if Appointed Adopted: December 7, 1978, Updated 4/14/10 TOWN HIGHWAY SUPERINTENDENT DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Plans, coordinates and administers the activities of the Town Highway Departments; does related work as required. This is administrative and engineering work involving the responsibility for planning and carrying out the Town's Highway Construction and repair program. The work is performed under general direction of the Town Board which sets policy. Supervision is exercised over all the activities of the department and requires the efficient utilization of men, machinery and materials. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Has responsibility for carrying into operation the Town program of highway construction and repair; Supervises all town highway employees and functions of the department; Keeps time records and prepares Town Highway payrolls and submits all payrolls to the Town Supervisor for payment; Plans and supervises the purchase of materials, machinery and equipment; Prepares the Town Highway budget for the Town Board and sets priorities for maintenance of roads and bridges; Investigates complaints regarding road conditions and orders corrections when necessary; Consults with County Superintendent on bidding materials and other county related matters. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of modern road construction, maintenance and repair practices; Good knowledge of procedures involved in road building, maintenance and bridge repair; Initiative and resourcefulness in working in a small highway department; Ability to get along well with others; Good judgment, dependability; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate of high school and four years experience in highway construction or maintenance and one year of supervisory experience. **Note: Minimum Qualifications for Cayuta per David Reed, Town Supervisor on 4/14/10 Graduate of a high school or recipient of a high school equivalency diploma, one year of supervisory experience, and resident of Town of Cayuta.
