Mobile Work Crew Supervisor 1 Jurisdiction: Schuyler County Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: January 1, 2005 Updated July 12, 2010; Reviewed: July 18, 2011 MOBILE WORK CREW SUPERVISOR DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Supervises, coordinates, and trains the Department of Social Services’ Mobile Work Crew participants in a variety of work activities at public and not-for-profit agencies. Works under the general supervision of the employment unit supervisor with leeway allowed for use of independent judgment in completion of job duties. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Supervises and coordinates the Department’s Mobile Work Crew (MWC) program which includes: Assess jobs to determine appropriateness for work crew; Schedule work site projects; Provide direct on-the-job supervision of MWC participants; address initial issues that may arise with attendance, work ethic, hygiene, etc. before referral to unit supervisor; Provide training and instruction of MWC participants in various construction projects that may include painting, carpentry, masonry, roofing, and other related work; Assist with workers schedule as needed; Transports workers to and from their homes to the work site; Trains workers on the safe and proper techniques for completing projects and work assignments; Maintains time and attendance records, participant evaluations, and other reports as specified/required; Plans and coordinates with the unit supervisor or other designated employee on projects and MWC participants; Makes the unit supervisor aware of the status of projects and any complaints or unusual circumstances that may arise; Participates with the MWC in ground maintenance work activities, such as mowing, clearing land and roadsides, maintaining park and recreational areas, raking leaves, etc.; Works with the MWC on projects that may include painting, carpentry, masonry, roofing, and related work; Works with the MWC on projects that may include very basic electrical, plumbing, or mechanical work; Provides routine maintenance on power tools, equipment, and light motor vehicles; Instructs MWC participants in proper use of hand and power tools to complete projects; Estimates and records time and materials required for projects; May relay information to MWC participants on available job openings in the local area; Orders parts, supplies, materials, and tools within the department’s budget, subject to supervisory and/or department head approval. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology, and safety precautions of the standard building trades; ---PAGE BREAK--- Mobile Work Crew Supervisor 2 Working knowledge of OSHA and local building codes; Working knowledge of grounds maintenance activities and equipment; Working knowledge of roofing, carpentry, painting, and masonry; Ability to train and motivate crew members and accept responsibility for the work of others; Ability to plan and lay out and supervise the work of others; Ability to observe and implement safety precautions; Ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships; Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing; Willingness to work outdoors under adverse weather conditions; Mechanical aptitude; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A. Graduation from a two year college recognized by the University of the State of New York with an Associate Degree in construction, building maintenance technology, or related field; and three years experience in one of the building construction trades, commercial building maintenance, or a related field, of which two years shall have been with responsibility for supervision and training of staff; or B. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five years of experience in one of the building construction trades, commercial building maintenance, or a related field, with at least two years having been in a supervisory capacity as described in or C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as described in A or B above. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Operator License is required at time of appointment and for the duration of employment. Possession of a current Basic First Aid Course certificate at time of hire or completion of course within six months of hire.
