Jurisdiction: Schuyler County Jurisdictional Class: Non-Competitive Pending Jurisdictional Classification (OMCSD) Adopted: May 22, 2003 Updated: November 21, 2025 SENIOR AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Supervises and participates in the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of buses, cars, trucks and other mechanical equipment. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Transportation Supervisor and/or Assistant Transportation Supervisor. Supervision may be exercised over Automotive Mechanics. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Performs all aspects of mechanical maintenance and servicing to buses, cars, trucks and other mechanical equipment; May assign repair tasks to subordinate staff and inspect work in progress and upon completion; Diagnoses difficult maintenance problems and recommends repair methods; Performs interior and exterior cleaning and general repair to buses, cars, trucks and other mechanical equipment; Prepares vehicles for and participates in inspections; Orders, inventories, and stocks mechanical supplies and equipment; Establishes and implements schedules for vehicle maintenance and repairs; Ensures compliance with all state and federal mandated requirements; Makes emergency roadside (field) repairs and retrieval of buses, cars, trucks and other equipment; Drives buses, cars, trucks and other mechanical equipment as needed; Performs facility and site maintenance as needed. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of standards motor equipment repair methods and of the terminology, tools and safety precautions of the trade; Good knowledge of machine shop procedures; Skill in performing complex motor equipment and automotive repairs; Ability to accurately diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems in equipment; Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; Ability to maintain records and make reports; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A. An Associate’s degree in automotive equipment technology or mechanics and two years of experience as a skilled mechanic in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment; OR B. Graduation from a high school technical or vocational program in automotive equipment mechanics and three years of experience as defined in OR C. Four years of experience as defined in OR D.
