We do this through education, creating community service opportunities, and advocacy. All this while promoting positive local activities. Purpose: To encourage youth involvement in the community, enhance leadership skills. To provide a platform for sharing policy ideas and concerns. Key Components: Policy: Letting youth voice their concerns and thoughts in a meaningful way is important in Salem. To better enable that, this commission will meet with City officials and other stakeholders to discuss how various issues impact Salem youth, to learn about City projects, and offer feedback to decision-makers. Networking & Advocacy: Members of the Salem Youth Commission have an opportunity to recommend ideas/laws and dialogue directly with the Mayor and City Council City. Members will speak with those that work directly in areas critical to Salem’s quality of life. Education: Salem Youth Commission members will learn how local government operates and how it responds to the needs of a community. Members may also participate in leadership development opportunities. Service: Salem Youth Commission members engage in community service projects with City staff and community leaders, as well as other youth. Other: The Salem Youth Commission may organize special events or programs.
