Salem Tree Commission’s Century Tree Program Touch the Future – Plant a Tree! Salem’s Century Tree Program allows you to do just that. In conjunction with Salem’s upcoming 400th Anniversary celebration, the Tree Commission is seeking locations throughout the city to plant tall, majestic trees that will be enjoyed by generations to come. Each tree will be marked with a special Century Tree tag. + Where Should they Go? Can you recommend good planting sites? The trees can be planted on private property or public land. They should be visible from the sidewalk or road (within 20 feet of the property line), have adequate sunlight and space for roots to grow, be clear of overhead wires and be accessible to water. The Tree Warden will conduct a site visit and approve sites for the annual planting. The City will plant and monitor the trees placed on private property for three years. The property owner will be responsible for watering, and after the first three years, maintaining the tree.
