Roadway and Sidewalk Improvement Projects Helpful Hints Fact Sheet to Ease the Impact of Construction Safety is our Most Important Business Maintaining a safe construction work zone in your neighborhood is the top priority of the City of Salem for Roadway and Sidewalk Improvement Projects. You can help by: Reminding children EVERYDAY to walk only in the marked pedestrian access ways. Caution them to stay away from the work sites and construction equipment. Residents and businesses should familiarize themselves with the work zone and learn firsthand about pedestrian detours so they can instruct their children and patrons. The City’s Resident Project Engineer and/or Construction Superintendent are the best onsite resources to assist residents and businesses with access issues. Senior citizens and people with disabilities, please take advantage of the Resident Engineer’s and/or police detail assistance to get you through any rough areas in front of your homes. They are there to help you. Cars and Parking Please follow the parking instructions posted on street signs provided by the Contractor. In addition, the contractor will post signs on the street in the vicinity of the construction site. During the day, when necessary, residents may need to plan to park on other streets, as access may be difficult due to the nature of this construction. Dominick Pangallo Mayor DEBORAH L. Temporary, short-term driveway or parking lot closures may be required, due the the nature of the construction. Advanced notice will be given to you in anticipation of those situations; your advanced cooperation is appreciated. If deliveries need to be made to your home or business or service/repairmen need access, please coordinate the timing of these activities with the City of Salem Engineering Department ([PHONE REDACTED]). Please remember that advance notice of these activities will help us all! To assist us in this effort, we have developed a Continuation of Special Needs Form. For recurring activities that require daily and/or weekly access to your home or business or planned special events, please fill out the form and return it to the City’s Engineering Department. These forms are confidential between you and the project representatives. The Resident Engineer will make every effort to make arrangements ahead of time to maintain access to your home or business for these activities. Be assured that access will always be available for emergency services: ambulance, police, fire, DPW services and utility repair crews, and for the customers of and deliveries to businesses. City services will continue throughout the construction period including snow removal, rubbish and recycle pick-ups, etc. An Ounce of Precaution is Worth a Pound of Cure There will be a certain amount of vibration associated with the construction of the roadway improvements. Take preventive measures to safeguard belongings during this construction activity. Consider protecting valuable pictures, plants and knick-knacks by removing them from walls and from other vulnerable positions such as: door lintels, shelves, windowsills, hutches, china cabinets, end tables, coffee tables and any other areas perceived as being vulnerable to vibrations. A rule we often use is: If the vibrations from a slamming door are a concern to you on the placement of your valuables they should be protected. In addition, please remove wind chimes and other porch and garden ornamentation that may be adversely impacted by the construction.
