At the Governor’s direction, Commissioner Bartlett, with the approval of the Public Health Council, issued an order that authorized pharmacists to dispense Naloxone Rescue Kits to a person at risk of experiencing an opiate-related overdose or a family member, friend or other person in a position to assist a person at risk of experiencing an opiate-related overdose.” Text from Massachusetts Department of Public Health Example Standing Order – Available at www.mass.gov **This standing order covers BOTH Nasal Naloxone and Intramuscular Naloxone SO WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Take home Naloxone kits can be dispensed by a pharmacist WITHOUT a prescription under this current standing order. Registered pharmacists participating in the pharmacy access program should be familiar with the “Naloxone Pamphlet” that comes with your kit. Registered pharmacists dispensing the kits should be familiar with the use of the Naloxone Rescue Kits. Individuals should become familiar with assembly and administration of Naloxone prior to the need to use it. HOW MUCH IS THE KIT? Some insurance plans will cover some or all of the cost. Some health centers will cover the cost of the kit for their patients. The cost will vary and we STRONGLY suggest that you contact the pharmacy or your insurance and ask for prices before ordering the prescription. Prices can range from $0.00 for the 2 dose/2 atomizer kit up to $50.00 for a 2 dose/2 atomizer kit.
