PLACEMEENT AND CARE OF CARTS - Place carts with wheels facing the house, so the lid opening faces the street. - Carts should be at least 3 feet apart from trees, cars or other items to allow access by WM trucks. - Carts are the property of the city and assigned to specific addresses. Please keep them on assigned property. - Residents should label carts with address only, keep them clean, and lids closed. - Lid of cart must be closed. Any overflowing carts will not be picked up. YARD WASTE - Yard waste will be collected by a seperate truck on designated weeks. (see Collection Schedule on the inside panel for dates.) - Yard waste must be placed in paper bags or open barrels. - The transfer station at 12 Swampscott Rd is opened seasonally to drop off yard waste on Saturdays 7am to 3pm and Sundays 9am to 5pm EXCESS TRASH AND RECYCLING For extra trash, please use orange overflow bags available for purchase at $12.50 per roll of 5 from: Crosby's, Ace Hardware, DPS, and the Collector's Office. If your recycling cart has a green lid, your recycling will be collected on the Green weeks. If your recycling cart has a Blue lid, your recycling will be collected on the Blue weeks. Recycling is mandatory in Salem. HOLIDAYS Collection will be delayed one day if a holiday falls on or before your regular service day. TRASH (64-gallon Cart) - weekly collection - Trash must be bagged. This will keep the cart clean and prevent litter on windy days. - Do not place recyclables in trash carts. - Any trash materials that cannot fit in the cart must be placed in approved orange overflow bags on top of or beside the cart. - White goods are picked up and bulk items are picked up every other week on your recycling day. (limit 2 items per household per pickup). Please call WM (800) 972-4545 at least 48 hours in advance to schedule these pickups. Non-acceptable items for trash & recycling cart - Dirt, sod, yard waste, concrete and rock. - Construction, demolition debris or wood. - Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics. - Hot ashes or flammable materials such as oil, gas, and paint. RECYCLING (96-gallon Cart) - every other week collection on same day as trash - All recycling goes directly into blue cart. - Never place any recyclables in plastic bags. - Pick up weeks are based on the color of your recycling cart lid. Non-acceptable items for recycling cart - Trash, plastic bags, plastic wrap, fabric, clothes, yard waste, electronics. - Anything made from foam - even if a recycling symbol is present.
