The water pipes in the sidewalks, especially in downtown areas, have caused several falls. Also until developers build single level condo's and apartments that are not teeny tiny people will not leave their homes and downsize. I see plenty in the 600-800 square ft range but not enough 1100-1500 which would make more sense when people sell a home. Also I understand to a developer townhouses are more cost efficient to build, but most older people are looking for single level. 3/17/2016 2:07 PM 36 Please have traffic lights allow more time for pedestrians to cross the street. 3/16/2016 2:32 PM 37 To be able to continue living in Salem as I age 3/16/2016 2:28 PM 38 We need our new senior center!! 3/16/2016 1:08 PM 39 Affordable snow removal services; level sidewalks, even the brick ones! Watch those curb cuts outside the city center - - neighborhoods need them, too. How about a property tax discount for residents 65 and older? Senior Center has crappy offerings for "young" elders. How about offering Tai Chi classes, day trips, and a social center that doesn't look like an Adult Day Care facility? Or have a program that pairs an after-school program with elder volunteers for homework help and friendly, sympathetic ears to listen to their woes?? Could our restaurants all offer a senior discount? Or half portions for half price? And benches, lots of benches throughout the city center. We like to walk, but need frequent rests. 3/16/2016 11:18 AM 40 I have no interest in activities, spaces or events designed solely for old people. The things that enrich life for people of all ages are the things I plan to use and hope to enjoy as I age. Making spaces physically adaptable will benefit all people, not just seniors. 3/15/2016 8:41 PM 41 Reduction in property taxes for retired individuals (after submitting proof of retirement), regardless of age. 3/15/2016 7:05 PM 42 For the city in general to stop treating anyone over 60 as non-existent and unnecessary. Treating over 60's as if they have no mind or have good judgement. This city squanders the knowledge of older people. It is shameful. 3/15/2016 12:11 PM 43 Public sidewalks need constant attention. There are many dangerous areas in the downtown area. Holes, uneven surfaces, lifted surfaces and missing bricks that are easily tripped over. 3/15/2016 11:55 AM 44 listen to the people and parking for elderly who have no driveway especially in winter months 3/14/2016 9:21 PM 45 Need to have a new senior center here. 3/14/2016 6:36 PM 46 Services to assist with the care of an older or disabled person even if not over 60. 3/14/2016 3:17 PM 47 Low cost pet care services. 3/14/2016 2:04 PM 48 Consideration to older citizens who own two or three family homes. This is a valued commodity for the people of Salem and the surrounding communities. Once again, big business is trying to take out the little guy. Also, the shutting down of Spaulding Rehabilitation is very disconcerting. I am very surprised not to read or hear about any concerns about the Mental health facility going into the former Spaulding rehab building as well... 3/14/2016 12:06 PM 50 I had a knee replacement but dare not walk on the sidewalk because it's so uneven. 3/14/2016 11:43 AM 51 Build the senior center. 3/14/2016 9:24 AM 52 Love this city - always have - I think a "pride" program to help "keep Salem clean" and "don't be a litterbug" would be great ! I use the internet for everything and depend on it for connecting with others, research, and entertainment. I have been told that "wifi is not essential for life." I think it is. Most elder social activities do not fit me. I am active, walk miles every day. My biggest problem is low income so I could be more engaged in the community instead of scrambling for basics. Low income affects my health and happiness. 3/13/2016 11:40 PM 60 Need a mayor that is concerned about everyone in Salem not just certain groups 3/13/2016 1:09 PM 61 more cross walks along busy streets such as Derby st. and Orange..If not a cross walk at least a stop line painted in the roadway..Cars always roll right through that corner and onto Derby without looking for pedestrians... 3/13/2016 7:33 AM 62 Competent, qualified staff at COA. If the same staff and "core users" aka COA mafia transition to the new facility, you will not attract new users and the time and money invested in the place will be for naught. 3/12/2016 7:50 AM 63 Lower real estate taxes for retired seniors on a fixed income 3/11/2016 7:41 PM 64 a website for events and classes offered at the senior center 3/11/2016 5:39 PM 65 Good senior center 3/11/2016 5:26 PM 66 Well lighted walking areas, especially at ALL crosswalks; level and safe sidewalks; better maintained roads throughout the city; improved enforcement of safe pedestrian and bicycling behaviors (including mandatory lights on bikes), especially after dusk; improved pedestrian outlet from train station (use existing underground tunnel for safe crossing of Bridge St.); more bicycle lanes designed by cyclists. 3/11/2016 9:42 AM 67 Pay attention to what we say and respect and act on experience. 3/11/2016 9:11 AM 68 Some key questions seem to be missing: 1. Do you presently volunteer? 2. Classification of volunteering activity 3/11/2016 8:05 AM 69 Bike trails, better sidewalks, access to public transportation. Smaller trash and recycling bins. 3/10/2016 8:07 PM 70 good medical care! 3/10/2016 5:35 PM 71 More activities for Seniors. New Senior Center... When is that happening?? We get all kinds of promises because we vote.. Blah blah blah 3/10/2016 5:18 PM 72 Better lighting at crosswalks around the city... 3/10/2016 5:12 PM 73 I think it's important that Salem be as beautiful as possible. Walking around all neighborhoods should be safe and pleasant. It's important that all residents take pride in and enjoy their special city. 3/10/2016 12:11 PM 74 Salem is a wonderful community for the elderly! 3/10/2016 12:09 PM 75 Well defined traffic markings and street crossings Clean and well maintained streets and sidewalks Well thought out tree plantings that don't encroach on sidewalks, especially in the downtown 3/10/2016 11:34 AM 76 Complete the NEW senior center 3/10/2016 9:35 AM 77 Rising taxes and their effects on senior adults. Shoveling and economic transportation during bad weather. Service checking on older adults when they are released from the hospital and having affordable temporary home cleaning services made available. 3/10/2016 9:32 AM 78 I do a lot of walking, so safe sidewalks are important to me....as well as safe street crossing areas. 3/10/2016 9:15 AM 63 / 66 Age Friendly Salem Survey ---PAGE BREAK--- 79 This survey pretty well covered it! It's nice to be asked. After the previous winter, at the top of my list is assistance with snow removal....especially on the sidewalk abutting my property. This can be so difficult to shovel because of snowplow berms, and there is a fine if I don't. I asked two neighborhood snow plowers and was given a fee of one hundred dollars from both. This would cost more than the fine, but being older, I don't want other older people to have to struggle with walking in front of my house. I also asked at the Senior Center about less expensive snow removal assistance and was informed that there were so many people requesting it they could not add any more people to the list. It seems there are many of us who need this assistance! 3/10/2016 8:49 AM 80 Need independent spaces where organizations can meet (I volunteer as Executive Director of a non-profit) and independent training can be done like teaching drumming or other musical instruments. Most places are too expensive to allow this to happen. 3/10/2016 8:32 AM 81 All the residents on Cedarcrest Road need the sewer pipe extended up the street. The majority of us are over 60 and cannot afford new septic systems in the event of a Title 5 failure. We need the ability to connect to the city sewer system. 3/10/2016 8:18 AM 82 I am very concerned with the side walks in my neighborhood. We have old trees that have lifted the sidewalks making it difficult to walk. A lot of these trees need trimming or should just be taken down. I've asked many times and nothing had been done. I live in the green lawn cemetery neighborhood. Please help 3/10/2016 7:55 AM 83 Accessible parking for seniors and better maintained sidewalks. 3/10/2016 6:33 AM 84 Improve the COA. Build a new center for Seniors only. Get a director who can improve the programs 3/10/2016 5:33 AM 85 I love where I live now but rents are skyrocketing and leases offered here are for one year max. I'd like to see some allowances made for those on a fixed income. My place here (Bell at Salem Station) is perfect for me but I am afraid I will not be able to keep up with the rent increases in the future. Some rent control or stabilization would allow me remain in the place I love. 3/10/2016 12:25 AM 86 Parking in Salem difficult and too expensive. There are many things I would like to do in Salem, but I can't park. Much easier to just drive to Beverly where parking is easier 3/9/2016 10:57 PM 87 This is an excellent survey, it is detailed, thoughtful, comprehensive, respectful, genuine. Thank you. 3/9/2016 8:26 PM 88 Salem does not feel like a city that prioritizes pedestrians. There are major intersections with no crosswalks or walk signals, unenforced speed limits in residential areas, and sidewalks that disappear. Cars seem to take priority. 3/9/2016 8:06 PM 89 None 3/9/2016 6:30 PM 90 Bike paths please 3/9/2016 6:29 PM 91 local MBTA senior pass accessability. have tried unsuccessfully to get teenagers to do lawn work - thru Essex Aggie & Salem High & Senior Center. 3/9/2016 6:00 PM 92 I wish there were a town center with all services centrally located. Affordable housing is crucial and the sidewalks in the McIntire District are dangerous. 3/9/2016 5:52 PM 93 Build the senior center! 3/9/2016 5:46 PM 94 I often travel and was hoping to be able to take the train in and out of Boston. However, the train schedule is not good - often only one train every hour and a half, and most importantly, there are steep steps which are difficult for me, and impossible if I am carrying a suitcase or heavy briefcase. I am totally disappointed in the train station and schedule and have paid a fortune for private rides because the train hasn't worked out well. Have been very upset about this and have even thought of moving because of this. There should be easy access to and from Boston & Cambridge..... 3/9/2016 5:18 PM 95 Get the new senior center built. 3/9/2016 5:07 PM 96 Listen to the people instead of what is set in stone by some political figure. 3/9/2016 4:58 PM 97 Get rid of those dangerous downtown bricks & cobblestones, they are trip hazards & open up Essex St Mall, to vehicles to bring people there...it is unsafe to walk thru there. Especially at night. 3/9/2016 4:57 PM 98 Ticketing and removal of cars parked on streets in front of and close to fire hydrants and private driveways.Parking discounts for the elderly who drive. Reliable private Winter snow removal.Removal of paid City workers, and employees who are rude to Seniors. Senior advisors placed in all City Councilors and City Jobs and removal of those in those positions who are corrupt.....Most of us Elderly earned that respect ! 3/9/2016 4:56 PM 99 senior discounts, way to express neighborhood issues without getting id'd re: parking, crime 3/9/2016 4:49 PM 100 Parking is a problem for seniors. We have to move our cars from parking lots that need to be cleared & have no guaranteed place to park indoors. Each snow storm is very stressful until my car is finally parked in a garage. Fewer and fewer garage spaces are available for the able public of any age! 3/9/2016 4:47 PM 64 / 66 Age Friendly Salem Survey ---PAGE BREAK--- 101 Ensure that older population is not a segregated population. Find alternative engaging, participatory programs/opportunitities to be with younger, diverse groups. Enforce traffic violations (speeding, blocked crosswalks) downtown. Support internet/social media with other visible forms of of community outreach. 3/9/2016 4:35 PM 102 At age 82, I am fortunate to be healthy and independent now. My main concern is the future, finding affordable and decent (not fancy) living when assistance is needed, as I have no family near. 3/9/2016 4:12 PM 103 Must have vibrant active senior center 3/9/2016 4:11 PM 104 Start paying less attention to so called "minority" issues. Majority is supposed to rule. Affirmative action programs are geared to special interests. White middle class has now become the "Minority Class" but it is not treated as such. More and more money is spent on "new comers" and "immigrants" while the people who built this city with their taxes are being ignored. 3/9/2016 3:49 PM 105 Free parking stickers for Salem Residents 3/9/2016 3:47 PM 106 Our senior center is a disgrace and should be declared uninhabitable. The city's process for building a new center is an even worse disgrace. 3/9/2016 3:39 PM 107 Having lived in Salem my entire life I plan to remain here. 3/9/2016 3:13 PM 108 Pretty much covered in the survey Most concerning is winter parking because of snow emergencies and recent trash bins which are cumbersome and inconvenient 3/9/2016 3:02 PM 109 the sidewalks in Salem are a hazard- Please fix them 3/9/2016 2:32 PM 110 We like to call Salem age friendly but we still don't have a senior Center that has now been watered down to a Community Center. This again shows a lack of respect for seniors. There is much more emphasis put on new developement rather than providing for those who have been this city of many years. New people moving into a community don't have the same feelings as those who have suported it for so many years. We need to show more respect for seniors, take a lesson from Japan 3/9/2016 2:30 PM 111 I think you should have asked how important each item is rather than us it important or not important. Everything is important. For me, personally, being able to safely walk and cross all streets in the city is very important. 3/9/2016 1:27 PM 112 Salem needs a new senior center. I go to the senior center in Peabody instead. 3/9/2016 1:27 PM 113 Build the Senior Center in a safe location that will not provide additional health issues for seniors. Stop pricing seniors out of Salem with high taxes..this administration has raised taxes every year and they are crazy high to have to go to other communities for services for seniors. Adult Day Health program would be very nice...Peabody has a great one and it is a shame that Salem has to refer people over there for services. 3/9/2016 12:57 PM 114 I do NOT feel safe in this city. Police need to address the chronic drug and alcohol problem 3/9/2016 12:56 PM 115 Better maintained crosswalks.....side walk repair...enforcement of snow removal from sidewalks and intersections on main roads. The consistant removal of snow from sidewalks in front of all City properties. Enforcement of motor vehicle laws concerning pedestrian crossings and blocking intersections, particularly in the downtown area. 3/9/2016 12:56 PM 116 We need a stop light at the corner of First Street and Swampscott Road. 3/9/2016 12:54 PM 117 a readily available list of local handymen and snow shovellers 3/9/2016 12:44 PM 118 Senior Center that is more readily accessible with adequate staffing. Realistic flat rate at YMCA programs for Seniors as is the case in Peabody, MA. Salem should use Boston's former Mayor Menino's programmes for 'out reach' to Senior's in need of assistance. Don't understand how Salem, with such minimal facilities, personnel and truly dedicated /cost effective programs for Senors qualifies for this designation. 3/9/2016 12:43 PM 119 much cleaner streets, bags and trashcans for dog poop (Salem is disgustingly poopy) 3/9/2016 12:39 PM 120 Fine people that don't shovel their sidewalks after a snow storm. Very difficult walking on slippery sidewalks. Too many people do not shovel their walks. 3/9/2016 12:36 PM 121 It is important not to isolate older folks from younger folks. Also please ban smoking everywhere that is feasible - smoke and the disgusting ashtray smell people carry on themselves aggravates us cranky old people to no end. We want to live better lives than previous generations - healthier, fitter, more vibrant - and the fact that Salem is so, so chock full of smokers is enough to make some of us move away. 3/9/2016 12:30 PM 122 Low rent nice apartments for seniors 3/9/2016 12:28 PM 123 Salem State University, on the surface, seems to be the major priority of city government. This influx of young people, year after year, does not provide an environment that is conducive to senior living. Yet, the univerisity continues to expand. 3/9/2016 12:24 PM 124 Lower tax 3/9/2016 12:16 PM 65 / 66 Age Friendly Salem Survey ---PAGE BREAK--- 125 Fix sidewalks tree roots pushing up Cement sidewalks tripping hazard especially elm Ave. 3/9/2016 12:08 PM 126 None 3/9/2016 12:07 PM 127 Salem should offer us safer and more reliable ways to live without a car. Key needs: sidewalk & crosswalk maintenance & plowing; strict enforcement of crosswalk laws; safe, dedicated bike and pedestrian lanes; frequent public transit, especially to downtown and transit hubs (Blue line, commuter rail). Improvements could be funded by charging for ALL on-street parking. Streets are city property and belong to all citizens. Auto owners have no God-given right to freely use them to store their vehicles. Parking stickers and metered spaces should cost whatever the free market will bear. 3/9/2016 12:05 PM 128 Free internet. Free snow removal. A pool of volunteers to help with home maintenance or repair projects. 3/9/2016 11:56 AM 129 Additional police presence in the downtown area. 3/9/2016 11:55 AM 130 Trash and recycle is difficult for older persons who have to transport containers up and down stairways on pickup day. 3/9/2016 11:52 AM 131 safer sidewalks and crosswalks; partnerships with Salem State Univ.; cross-generational activities 3/8/2016 7:56 PM 132 During snow or other emergencies, it is important to make sure disabled people can get out of their homes. Sidewalks need to be even and safe. Throughout Salem, they are not. There needs to be safe and reliable taxi services. 3/8/2016 5:17 PM 133 Get the New Senior Center built once and for all!!! 3/8/2016 3:48 PM 134 A new senior center!! More "field trip" type of events to cultural, entertaining and/or sporting events. Senior, condo style housing downtown 3/8/2016 1:28 PM 135 help with reliable snow removal - would be willing to pay great rates- maybe salem high school students would do this 3/8/2016 11:13 AM 136 It is very important Salem supports businesses and tourism. While more housing often detracts, more business always adds to the community. It is a mistake to tear down businesses to build housing. 3/8/2016 10:47 AM 137 Fix the sidewalks. Clean the parks. Leash the dogs. Expand handicapped parking. Repair the roads. 3/8/2016 9:35 AM 138 I would like a Senior center, not a community center. There are many places for disadvantaged kids; schools, YMCA, Boys and Girls Club.etc. Why must seniors be forced to share a space. Surrounding communities have beautiful centers for their seniors. It seems like our mayor dislikes seniors and wants to turn Salem into a low income rental community. You raise my taxes and spend it on hiring someone to monitor my trash. You use state grants to paint sidewalks to look like Tijuana in an historically beautiful old town. You spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to rehab a park but can't build a decent SENIOR center. The mayor will always win because you are turning this town into a low income, welfare dependent city. Why would Seniors stay here? 3/8/2016 8:43 AM 139 Stop catering to young, transient residents. 3/8/2016 7:07 AM 140 We need a place in Salem that sells MBTA services, Charlie Cards, train tickets, etc. Red Lion no longer does it. Also, so many Salem sidewalks need repairing. 3/7/2016 10:38 PM 66 / 66 Age Friendly Salem Survey
