SUITE 266, SEATTLE, WA 9811911 DESIGN CONCEPT NARRATIVE At Hopelink’s flagship location in Redmond, a new high standard for client services and community outreach will be set. Hopelink’s thoughtful planning and progressive service model will be an innovative cornerstone in the Redmond Community. Providing vital services such as an innovative grocery style food bank, emergency outreach services, education classes, community rooms, and an on-site urban garden farm-to-table food and nutrition delivery model, Hopelink aims to integrate the interior and exterior spaces into a seamless client and visitor experience. The placement of the structure on the site lends itself to the function of the interior uses; focusing the more outward uses on the north, street facing side. The building is focused on the corner of 154th and 90th, and presents a highly transparent public facade, emphasizing the role Hopelink plays in the community. The two story glazing at the corner allows the pedestrian and vehicular passer by to view the activity within the space at varying scales and levels of interaction. It also provides an opportunity for Hopelink to showcase their mission and connection to the community through visual displays. The building is bisected by a gallery hall connector providing access points and an entry sequence from both the pedestrian, off of 154th, and vehicular, of off the parking lot. Each entry point is further defined by a transparent storefront glazing system and unique architectural roof form. The gallery hall serves as an organizing element within the building, and each of the major program uses, including the elevator, stairs, and bathrooms core functions, are located off of this space. At the ground floor and to the north of the gallery, where the majority of the active client service spaces are located, the architecture reflects this function with a higher level of transparency and different materials than the southern food bank grocery and storage, where the materials are foundational and less transparent. The fenestration serves as an organizing element on the facade, linking the north and south elements together. The change in materials between the two elements serves to transition from the very public, transparent street frontage to the more opaque requirements of the food bank storage area, more closely relating to the manufacturing typology of the buildings to the south. Food, nutrition, and well being are core principles of the Hopelink mission. The building and its relation to the site emphasize and celebrate these principles. As visitors and clients enter the building either from the parking lot or from the north transit stop, they will pass through a public plaza with food production areas, a greenhouse with vegetable starts, educational signage, and a gathering spaces. The plaza is meant to be informative and make a visual connection between the food bank and the food that is grown on site. The King County Sammamish River Trail promotes healthy living for employees, visitors and the public, with active connections made from the site to the trail. Enhancements to the buffer zone will also be made to strengthen the connectivity of the site to the Sammamish River and to nature.
