Payment Options You can pay for trips and activities at the Puyallup Activity Center with cash, check, money order, Visa or Mastercard. Walk-In Puyallup Activity Center 210 West Pioneer Puyallup, WA 98371 Inclement Weather The Puyallup Activity Center will be open during inclement weather (i.e. heavy snow, ice, rain, wind) with the exception of the City’s instruction to close. However, trips, classes, and other programs may be cancelled due to the weather conditions. Please call the Center before you attempt to come in. We do not encourage anyone to drive, much less walk, to the Center if the roads and sidewalks are unsafe. As a general rule of thumb, if the Puyallup School District has cancelled school, we strongly advise all of our seniors to stay home. Rent the Puyallup Activity Center The Puyallup Activity Center is a 12,000 square foot facility located in the heart of downtown Puyallup. The facility has a multi-purpose room, which can seat 100 guests, classrooms, and a commercial grade kitchen. The Activity Center can accommodate a wide variety of events including weddings, receptions, meetings, conference, and other special occasions (limited availability during Activity Center open hours). BENEFITS OF HEALTHY HEARING & WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW - PRESENTATION Monday, November 21 12:30 – 1:30 PM Presenter: Leonard Kramer Powers Hearing Mr. Kramer will discuss the overall function of ears; what causes your ears to ring; why two ears are better than one; the benefits of addressing hearing loss; and some of the pitfalls you might encounter if you do not take care of your hearing. No need to pre-register. There will be a question and answer period following his presentation. THE BEAUTY OF MUSIC AND DANCE Come join “The Silver Stars”, a multi- dimensional team whose membership includes Ikuko Ponder and Steve Behr as they share with us a program of movement, music, dance and a few skits to liven your day. Their unique program presents eight different dance complimented with music from the Big Bands of the 40’s and beautiful original costumes. Ikuko (Ikuko alone has 8 costume changes) and Steve strongly believe that dancing is the perfect movement activity that supports active aging and improves body kinetics, balance, mental discipline, social- interaction and more importantly, it’s fun! BACK BREAKER TIPS FOR MAINTAINING A HEALTHY BACK Friday, December 16 12:30 – 1:30 PM Presenter: Janae Taylor, Health Care Liaison LINDEN GROVE HEALTH CARE With the onset of winter, we all need to be aware of the consequences of putting too much pressure on your back. Remember, do not bend at the waist bend at the hips and knees, keeping your back straight. When lifting, use the large muscles of your legs, not the small muscles in your back. Keep your hips and shoulders aligned, avoid twisting, and face in the direction of your job. Use both arms whenever possible. Change your body position frequently, sitting and standing, avoid crossing your legs. Know your limits, get help when necessary. Have you thought of taking some beginning classes in Yoga? JOINT PROTECTION AND PROPER BODY MECHANICS PIONEER THERAPY CENTER Tuesday, November 29, 2016 12:30 – 1:30 PM Instructor: Jessica Sides, COTA/L No fee Learn how to prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of arthritis utilizing joint protection principles. Joint protection means using your joints in ways that avoid excess stress. This can involve changing your surroundings and the way you perform your daily activities. Accidents, trauma, and overuse of a particular joint can cause injuries. These injuries can be painful and increase the odds that you will develop osteoarthritis. Warning signs of arthritis include joint pain, swelling (sometimes), joint stiffness, and difficulty moving the joint. Important components of joint protection principles are using good posture and body mechanics, maintaining strength and range of motion, and simplifying work with efficiency techniques. ---PAGE BREAK--- Puyallup Activity Center I November - December 2016 8 — DAILY ACTIVITIES & CLASSES OIL PAINTING Tuesdays 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Drawing and painting are the foundation skills of making art. Share your artistic talent and paint with old and new friends. This class is free to everyone. You just need to bring your own supplies and come and join the group. There is no “official” instructor. PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP Third Friday 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM If you’d like to share some of your experiences and expertise with fellow novices, please stop by and we’ll all learn together! PINOCHLE GAME Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 12:30 - 4:00 PM Enjoy an afternoon playing pinochle with all your friends at our Activity Center. QUILTING BEE Fridays 9:30 - 11:30 AM It’s time for you to get started on a new project or complete an old one and share time with friends. If you would like to see award-winning quilters, stop by and take a gander. This class is for all levels of quilters. Material donations (cotton, flannel or fleece AND batting) are greatly appreciated. Quilts are made from generous contributions and donated to various charities. Quilts made in the class are donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Seattle Children’s Hospital, Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and Madigan Hospital. The larger quilts, along with pillow cases and pillows, are donated to abused women and children of the YMCA. REBUILDERS FOR WIDOWS, WIDOWERS & DIVORCED SENIORS Sundays 4:30 - 8:00 PM Join us at Rebuilders! Mainly, we are a group of widows, widowers and divorced seniors. If you have lost your spouse or are divorced, then this is the support group for you! It’s a wonderful way to meet new people. SENIOR NUTRITION PROGRAM- “CATHOLIC COMMUNITY SERVICES MEAL SITE” Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (Except when noted) Cost: $3.00 seniors $5.75 Non-Seniors Please be seated by 11:30 a.m. Lunch is served at 12:00 Noon. Its can affect every aspect of your life, including your energy, appetite, sleep, and interest in work, hobbies, and relationships. Some reasons depression in the elderly is so often overlooked include assuming depression is a normal part of aging, isolation, and reluctance to talk about feelings or ask for help. Warning signs of depression include sadness, unexplained aches and pains, lack of motivation and energy, loss of self-worth, sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, and neglecting personal care. The Puyallup Lions Club then takes these used glasses, has an optometrist put new lenses in them and then provides low income seniors with these new glasses.
