Adopted September 15, 2005 at GIS Users Committee Meeting, Amended January 2009 Project File Naming Conventions A) Why naming conventions: 1. Project naming uniformity between individuals/divisions will be attained and maintained, 2. There will be no guesswork involved between individuals/divisions regarding the date, or plot size of a project produced should someone other than the author be asked to reprint another’s project, or if their work is assumed by another individual/division, 3. Project history (versions) will be maintained through progressive date changes, 4. Education of individuals who use the maps will be made simple because a single naming convention will be used throughout the city. 5. ANSI standards are universal. *For standardization purposes the use of spaces and uppercase letters should be avoided in this naming convention. As older projects are accessed, their name should be updated to the standard. B) For all projects the following naming convention applies: projectname_date(monthdayyear)_plotsize.mxd For example: xproject_050808_ansid.mxd The alternative is to shorten a name to xproject_050808_e.mxd with the understanding that the last letter in a project name is always the plot size. For atypical paper sizes the following naming convention applies: projectname_data(monthdayyear)_plotsize.mxd For example: xproject_050808_18x18.mxd C) ANSI Standards Sheet Size Dimensions Comment ANSI E 34x44 ANSI D 22x34 E sheet folded in half ANSI C 17x22 D sheet folded in half ANSI B 11x17 C sheet folded in half ANSI A 8 ½ x 11 B sheet folded in half
