Fireworks are symbolic of Fourth of July celebrations. Bright, colorful and fun to watch, fireworks can be very dangerous. Even fireworks labeled “Safe and Sane” can severely burn or kill you. In fact, 90% of all fireworks- related injuries are caused by legal fireworks. Instead, the Los Angeles County Fire Department encourages everyone to leave it to the professionals and visit a fireworks show. If you plan on using “Safe and Sane” fireworks, learn how to protect yourself and your loved ones from fireworks-related injuries. Discover more safety topics at: fire.lacounty.gov facebook.com/LACoFD twitter.com/LACoFD FIREWORKS SAFETY Illegal Fireworks Any item that explodes, rises in the air, moves about the ground or is not approved and labeled “Safe and Sane” by the State Fire Marshal, is illegal in California. Below are examples of illegal fireworks that are not to be used: Safe and sane fireworks The sale of “Safe and Sane” fireworks in your community may be prohibited by local ordinance (check with your city). If they are allowed, “Safe and Sane” fireworks can only be purchased from a State Fire Marshal-licensed retail stand. When using “Safe and Sane” fireworks, remember: • Always read directions and use common sense. • Have an adult present. • Use outdoors only – away from buildings, vehicles, dry grass and other flammable objects. • Light one at a time, then quickly move away. • Keep others at a safe distance. • Never point or throw fireworks at another person. • Never alter or take apart. • Do not give to young children under any circumstances. • Have a bucket of water nearby for emergencies and for dousing misfired and spent fireworks. • Never attempt to re-light or fix malfunctioning fireworks.
