CITY OF PALMDALE MEDIA ALERT CONTACT: John Mlynar PHONE: 661/267-5115 DATE: April 25, 2018 PHOTO/INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITY WHAT: City of Palmdale’s employees gather at Pontcilán Square fountain for a group photo and to raise awareness of Denim Day. WHEN: TODAY, Wednesday, April 25, 10 am. WHERE: Poncitlán Square fountain, 38315 9th Street East, Palmdale Between Avenues Q-9 and Q-10 WHO: City of Palmdale staff wearing jeans and Demin Day buttons in support of Denim Day. BACKGROUND: The 19th Denim Day in LA 2009 was a campaign presented by Peace Over Violence, a non-profit agency designed to educate the public about rape and sexual assault. In 1998, an Italian Supreme Court decision overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore jeans, reasoning she must have helped her attacker remove them. This caused an international outrage. Since this decision, wearing jeans has become an international symbol of protest against destructive attitudes about sexual assault. INFO: For more information about Denim Day, contact Peace Over Violence at 310/392-8381 or visit www.peaceoverviolence.org. -30- Communications Department • 38300 Sierra Highway • Palmdale, CA 93550 www.CityofPalmdale.org
