Palmdale City Library POLICY # 210 – Unsupervised Children Approved by the Board of Trustees 1/19/16 Policy Statement: The Palmdale City Library welcomes children of all ages to use and enjoy the facilities, collections and programs offered by the Library. It is the responsibility of parents to supervise their children and insure that their children behave appropriately in the Library. To enable staff to promote use and access while insuring the safety of all library users, the Library has established the following policies: Regulations: 1. All children seven years old or younger must be accompanied at all times by a responsible person fourteen (14) years or older. Children seven years old or younger who are not accompanied by a responsible person will be deemed to be unsupervised children. Library staff cannot assume responsibility for children at any time. The first time that Library staff becomes aware that a child is unsupervised, the parent may be warned. If the situation persists after the parent has been notified, staff will ask the parent to leave the Library with the child. If the parent does not comply, staff will notify the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department. 2. All patrons, including children, are required to follow the Library’s Rules of Conduct. If a child becomes disruptive, staff will provide a warning to the child’s parent or guardian. Disruptive behavior is defined as any noisy, boisterous, or acting-out behavior, which is inappropriate in a library setting. This behavior may present a physical danger to the child or others, or may interfere with legitimate library activities. Disruptive children will be required to leave the Library if the behavior continues after receiving one warning. 3. Children and their caregivers should be aware of the daily closing times of the Library. If an unattended child aged twelve (12) years old or younger has not been picked up within ten (10) minutes of closing time, Library personnel will notify the Sheriff’s Department and request that a Deputy come to the Library and transport the child to the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station. A message notifying the caregiver of the child’s location will be left on the door of the Library building [see appendix Noncompliance with the Unsupervised Children policy may result in expulsion from the Library and/or suspension of library privileges. ---PAGE BREAK--- Appendix A Palmdale City Library Date To Caregivers of The Palmdale City Library is now closed.
