In 2005, Nye County began a comprehensive process to develop a Federal Lands Bill with the goals of: • Providing public land to Nye County for local economic development and municipal uses; • Designating certain public lands for future disposal and other uses, and direct the proceeds from future land sales; • Resolving the status of certain existing public land parcels and encumbered federal patents; • Resolving the wilderness study areas, formalizing final designation for wilderness areas, and establishing other conservation areas. From 2012 to 2019, County staff researched the suitability of specific public lands for these various uses. In 2019, the Board of Commissioners approved the basic concepts and framework in Nye County Resolution 2019-35. The Nye County Economic Development and Conservation Bill, which has not yet been introduced in either the U.S. Senate or the House of Representatives, is proposed for introduction as part of the 2022 National Defense Authorization Act.
