PAHRUMP TOURISM ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES page 1 ITEM # SUBJECT September 21, 2023 Pursuant to NRS, a meeting of the Pahrump Tourism Advisory Committee was held at 8:00 a.m. on September 21, 2023 in the Veterans Memorial Building in Pahrump, Nevada. 1. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE AND CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Vice Chairman Karen Spalding at 8:00 am in the Veterans Memorial Building. 2. ROLL CALL Attendees: PTAC members - Karen Spalding, Catherine Tillett, Tim Burke, DeAnna O’Donnell, Charles Ballew and Jack Sanders. Excused absences – James Horton and Debbie Davis. Unexcused Absence: Vicki Gladsjo. Also in attendance: Arlette Ledbetter, PTAC Director, Frank Carbone, BOCC. Guests: Peggy and Rob of RPS Video and Photography; Frank Best of the West; Wanda Baerga, Blissful Travel Co.; and Representative of BrainTrust, Kurt Ouchida. 3. APPROVAL OF AGENDA FOR SEPTEMBER 21, 2023 The agenda was approved as presented. 4. GENERAL PUBLIC COMMENT (Three-minute time limit per person). Action will not be taken on the matters considered during this period until specifically included on an agenda as an action item. (FIRST) None 5. FOR POSSIBLE ACTION- DISCUSSION AND DELIBERATION OF THE MINUTES OF THE PAHRUMP TOURISM ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING OF MAY 11, 2023 and March 9, 2023. Jack Sanders moved to approve the Minutes of the May 11, 2023 and July 13, 2023 PTAC Meetings as distributed. Catherine Tillett seconded the motion, and it was approved unanimously. 6. COMMITTEE COMMENTS (This item limited to announcements or topics/issues proposed for future workshops/agendas) Cathy Tillett commented on hotel occupancy due to Death Valley closure. Jack Sanders and Tim Burke both mentioned that international travel was back on. Deanna O’Donnell commented on the Fall Festival not being reported on and the Tourism Committee to be involved. Asked for this to be on the following agenda. 7. ANNOUNCEMENTS None 8. FOR DISCUSSION ONLY – PRESENTATION BY KURT OUCHIDA OF BRAINTRUST. ---PAGE BREAK--- PAHRUMP TOURISM ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES page 3 ITEM # SUBJECT May 11, 2023 Kurt gave the marketing presentation. Following the presentation Deanna asked Arlette why she was denied an interview for the Fall Festival. Karen told her this would be a future agenda item. Tim inquired when the website would be revamped. Arlette mentioned it would take some time. Charles Ballew asked when PTAC would be utilizing digital radio for advertising. Kurt answered that there are plans for this in the future. 9. FOR POSSIBLE ACTION – DISCUSSION AND DELIBERATION REGARDING TOURISM DIRECTOR’S REPORT. PTAC Director, Arlette Ledbetter announced this would be sent out later. 10. FOR POSSIBLE ACTION – DISCUSSION AND DELIBERATION REGARDING THE POSSIBILITY OF FORMING A “MAIN STREET TEAM” SIMILAR TO THE ONE ESTABLISHED IN TONOPAH, TO BEAUTIFY OUR MAIN STREET. Karen stated she has spoken to Kat in Tonopah for information on grants for such a project. Wanda Baerga volunteered to help with this project. 11. FOR POSSIBLE ACTION – DISCUSSION AND DELIBERATION REGARDING A PLAN FOR TOWN-WISE CHRISTMAS DÉCOR AND DECORATIONS. Tim spoke about wanting to see Christmas lights throughout the Pahrump; Promoting Christmas decorating contest and creating a map to follow. Kurt mentioned BrainTrust would promote this activity and suggested the name, “A Christmas Crawl”. Tim is to speak with the Chamber about this. DeAnna would like to join with Pahrump Community Partners. 12. DISCUSSION ONLY – A REPORT BY ROBERT ADAMS, PAHRUMP’S OHV TOURISM AMBASSADOR Robert was not present. Arlette to follow up with him. 13. FOR DISCUSSION ONLY - REPORT BY CHARLES BALLEW, PTAC PAHRUMP FAIRGROUNDS COMMITTEE. Charles reported the last meeting was energetic. Arlette added that funding matters have to be taken care of. 14. POSSIBLE ACTION - DISCUSSION AND DELIBERATION TO: 1) CONDUCT A GROUP DISCUSSION REGARDING IDEAS ON HOW TO GAINFULLY CONTRIBUTE AS AN ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, AS WELL AS SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM GOALS; 2) APPROVE TOURISM- RELATED RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, WITH RESPECT TO PTAC’S ROLE AS AN ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO THE BOCC. ---PAGE BREAK--- PAHRUMP TOURISM ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES page 3 ITEM # SUBJECT May 11, 2023 The following items were suggested by the PTAC: 1. Possibly bring the “Christmas Crawl” idea to the BOCC. 2. Karen brought up the installation of large, decorated letters, “PAHRUMP” for a photo op. 15. GENERAL PUBLIC COMMENT (SECOND) Rob, representing the Pahrump Museum, announced they are planning on having laser shows every other month. He reported the road construction on Basin hasn’t hindered business very much. Explained there is a small section in the museum set up for an “Alien” photo op. Lastly, They are working on a radio show about extraterrestrials. Frank Best of the West, spoke about the popularity of maps and the need for an accurate map of Pahrump. Frank Carbone suggested adding to the map specific areas of interest in Nye County, i.e. Ash Meadows. Wanda Baerga bought up Geocaching maps as well as listing things that can be done in a day as a means of enticing the younger generations. 16. COMMITTEE COMMENTS (SECOND) (THIS ITEM IS LIMITED TO ANNOUNCEMENTS OF TOPICS/ISSUES PROPOSED FOR FUTURE WORKSHOPS Tim Burke – Reported Northern Nevada wineries are coming out. Jack Sanders – Working to establish AVA. 17. ANNOUNCEMENTS (second) Next PTAC Meeting is scheduled for January 11, 2024 at 8:00 a.m. in the Veteran’s Memorial Building. 18. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 9:55 a.m. so the Committee along with BrainTrust could go to tour the Petting Zoo and Prairie Fire.
