PAHRUMP NUCLEAR WASTE & ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE DRAFT MINUTES April 01, 2022 Pursuant to NRS, a meeting of the Pahrump Nuclear Waste & Environmental Advisory Committee was held on April 01, 2022, at 11:30am at the Pahrump Community Library. 1. Pledge of Allegiance and Call to Order The Pledge was recited. 2. Roll Call John Pawlak, Robert Adams, Dale Griffith, Mike Smith, Bill Stremmel Absent: Debra Perna Guests: Heather Freeman – UNR Cooperative Extension, Nye Prickly Pears – Carolene Logue Gerard Cote, Jennifer Benedict 3. Approval of the Agenda for April 01, 2022. Bill S. – 1st Dale G. – 2nd 5 – yay / 0 - nay 4. GENERAL PUBLIC COMMENT (Three-minute time limit per person.) Action will not be taken on the matters considered during this period until specifically included on an agenda as an action item (first). None. 5. For Possible Action – Discussion and deliberation of minutes of the Pahrump Nuclear Waste and Environmental Advisory Committee (PNWEAC) meeting of, March 04, 2022. Announcements (first) Robert A. said there would be a cleanup tomorrow (Saturday-April 2nd) at Big Dune to be conducted by BLM + local agencies and civic groups in Armargosa Valley. John P. reported on last weekend’s “Cleanup Pahrump” activity noting entire trailer that were dumped, probably on the assumption they would be picked up. 7. For Possible Action – Discussion and deliberation regarding changes to the local environment. None. 9. For Possible Action – Discussion and deliberation regarding 2022 Earth Day/Arbor Day event. Bill S. – 1st Dale G. – 2nd 5 – yay / 0 – nay Carolene Logue offered to distribute flyers at her booth at another event this weekend. John P. played a humorous video advertising a bidet to add some levity to the occasion. Carolene Logue said that device could be useful for people suffering impaired arms and hands needed to perform personal hygiene. There will be shredding from 10:am until 2: pm. John P. said we would not need a permit since we would not be selling anything; Everything would be given away. 10. Presentation – Discussion regarding future informational presentations to the Board of County Commissioners. None. 11. For Possible Action – Discussion and deliberation – Regarding Environment issues in Southern Nevada and within the Town of Pahrump to include comments to the Board of Nye County Commissioners. Bill S. made an observation about “Radically Obsessive Myopic Absolutist environmentalism” skewing public policy away from a more prudent course. Mike S. said that Walmart recycling trailers were now being staffed on weekends as well as weekdays to deter dumping. He explained how recycling is financed out of fees paid to Pahrump Valley Disposal, whereas the $30. Parcel tax was split between $12. for operating all of the public landfills in Nye County + $18. Into a reserve fund for eventual closure of these facilities. Heather Freeman suggested that information about proper recycling / trash disposal be included in apartment lease agreements. 12. For Possible Action – Discussion and deliberation – Regarding Nuclear issues in Southern Nevada and within the Town of Pahrump to include comments to the Board of Nye County Commissioners. None. 13. Chair John P. said that an Ad Hoc meeting would be conducted via phone/Zoom Friday, April 8th to wrap up last matters for planning the Earth / Arbor Day event on April 16th. 15.
