PAHRUMP ADVISORY COMMITTEE Pahrump Environmental Management Advisory Committee June 03, 2022 scheduled - 11:30 AM / actual – 11:39 AM 1. Pledge of Allegiance and Call to Order. 2. Roll Call: John Pawlak, Dale Griffith, Debra Perna, Bill Stremmel Absent: Robert Adams, Mike Smith Guests: 3. Approval of the Agenda for June 3, 2022 Bill S. – 1st Dale G. – 2nd 4 – yay / 0 - nay 4. GENERAL PUBLIC COMMENT none . 5. For Possible Action – Discussion and deliberation of Minutes of the Pahrump Environmental Management Advisory Committee (PEMAC) meeting of May 6th, 2022. Dale G. – 1st Debra P. – 2nd 4 – yay / 0 – nay [NOTE: This motion was to adopt the hard copy printed minutes distributed and not those emailed from the County with a duplicate paragraph in item 7: Committee Comments.] 6. Announcements (first) Chair John P. distributed comparative illustrations of how extreme drought conditions are affecting larger areas of the desert southwest, including Southern Nevada. 7. Committee Comments – none 8. For Possible Action – Discussion and deliberation regarding changes to the local environment. none 9. For Possible Action – Discussion regarding 2022 Earth Day/Arbor Day event: Chair John P. said that only ten people used the shredding machine and most of the hot dogs were left over due to very low attendance because of the dust storm. $128 in donations was received for the hot dogs. In response to the question: “Do we have a backup date?” in the event of bad weather forecast on the day of next year’s event, Debra P. said that in 2023 Easter was on April 9th and Earth Day on April 22nd to frame the scheduling options. John P. said that when our committee reconvenes in the fall we can look at the town calendar, while noting the lack of availability of an indoor venue. ---PAGE BREAK--- 10. Presentation – Discussion regarding future informational presentations to the Board of County Commissioners. 11. For Possible Action – Discussion and deliberation – Regarding Environmental issues in Southern Nevada and within the Town of Pahrump to include comments to the Board of Nye County Commissioners: Bill S. – 1st Debra P. – 2nd 4 – yay / 0 - nay Chair John P. said that recently he had interviewed three guests about environmental issues on his KPVM-TV channel 25 program: Scott Lewis – Director of Nye County Emergency Services: Drought Heather Freeman – UNR Extension: Salt Cedar tree and Oleander bush eradication DRI representative: Community Environmental Monitoring Program (CEMP) CEMP operates a monitoring station in Pahrump east of Petrack Park near the fire station. The wind is picking up dust from more areas around the Valley as they dry out due to the intensifying drought. John P. commented that the recently completed Yellow Pine solar plant had chewed up natural vegetation which had anchored the soil near Tecopa Road and Highway 160. Over this summer Bill S. planned to research and draft a resolution for dust suppression on the three vacant lots immediately to the south, west and north of Deutch Park. 12. For Possible Action – Regarding Nuclear issues in Southern Nevada and within the Town of Pahrump to include comments to the Board of Nye County Commissioners. Dale G. – 1st Debra P. – 2nd 4 – yay / 0 - nay Bill S. said that ersatz storage schemes for spent nuclear fuels in the Permian Basin were encountering resistance from the fracking industry, offering slight hope that Yucca Mountain would still be in play for a permanent repository. 13. ANNOUNCEMENTS (Second) Bill S. said he would be attending Valley Electric’s annual meeting Friday, June 17 to make a pitch for wind power during the public comment period. 15.
