Approved and Adopted by Board of Commissioners: December 16, 2025 COUNTERFEIT MONEY POLICY Procedures to follow if a counterfeit bill is suspected: • Do not risk danger to self and others • Post the attached Counterfeit Policy in a public place and/or near any area where cash is collected • Have a supervisor examine the bill for a second time • UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES is the bill to be returned to the customer • Do not give change on a counterfeit bill • The customer should be told that the bill is suspect • Provide the customer with documentation – See attached report o Including the serial number of the bill that is being confiscated o Face Value amount of the bill o Explanation of why the bill is believed to be counterfeit o Contact information for the receiving department of the suspected counterfeit o Customer contact information, including telephone number and address Please contact the Treasurer’s Office prior to submitting a counterfeit bill in the department’s deposit for additional instructions. If the counterfeit bill is discovered after the fact, the accepting department will take a loss, so every effort needs to be made to determine the authenticity of the bill upon acceptance at the department level. Common ways to identify a counterfeit bill: 1. The bill should be marked with a pen that has a special ink in it. The ink turns a different color when the bill is counterfeit. These pens can be ordered through supplies. 2. Please note that some counterfeit bills are overlaid on real money so the pen may not pick these up as counterfeit. As a secondary measure please verify the “strip” in the bill. All bills larger than $1 have a strip that states the denomination of the bill. a. An example of a counterfeit bill would be a $50 might really be a $10 and the strip will read as $10. ---PAGE BREAK--- Approved and Adopted by Board of Commissioners: December 16, 2025 PUBLIC NOTICE Counterfeit Bills It is the policy of Otsego County to confiscate any counterfeit or suspected counterfeit bills. If you present a bill to this office that is suspected as counterfeit, a supervisor will be notified, and the bill will not be returned to you until after further investigation. This process could take up to one week. You will receive documentation that the bill is suspected as counterfeit and turned over to the bank for further investigation.
