---Even though it sounds logical, it is a misconception that it would be less expensive to build a jail only, instead of the whole complex. Actually, the opposite is true. ---It will be cheaper to fund a complex than it would to keep the Alpine Center open due to operational inefficiencies and the huge repair costs that are required at the Alpine Center. ---It is important to note that there are many other operational efficiencies, convenience to the public, and security reasons to support the idea of a complex and not "just a jail", but this spreadsheet focuses only on the measurable financial advantages. ---Another important note - our current court services/courtrooms occupy approximately 29,500 sq ft of inefficient space. The proposed complex eliminates wasted space, and the court services/courtrooms are planned to occupy approximately 25,000 sq ft in the new complex - a savings of 4,500 sq ft. This is because the County's Criminal Justice System would be operating out of space designed for its intended purpose, and no longer operating out of former 83-year-old hospital rooms.
