Identifying leaks…. Hot Water Tanks Check the pressure relief valve on the hot water tank. Sometimes these valves are plumbed directly into a nearby drain and may be leaking without your knowledge. Being cautious of the hot water that may be leaking through, look for signs of water and listen for a hissing or water sound that would indicate a leak Main Line Leak or Sprinkler Line Leaks Visibly inspect and walk the area between the meter and the shut off valve in your home. The same can be done for your sprinkling system by walking each watering station. Check for signs of a leak such as soft muddy areas or grass that is greener than the surrounding areas. Visible Inspection Check all faucets, shower heads and hose bibs for small leaks. Inspect washing machine hoses, ice makers, swamp cooler lines and water softeners. While not using any water sources listen to water pipes to see if a noise can be detected. Look at your driveway, curb or street for evidence of water flow. The evidence may not be a steady stream of water; it may only be a puddle that never dries up, or a darker spot (as in what happens when water is spilt on dry concrete). If an underground leak is suspected you may call Ogden City Utilities and set up an appointment for a crew to meet you at your property and check your meter for indications of leaks. If the meter indicates a leak, they will have you shut off the main valve inside your home. This will help to determine if the leak is within the home or outside.
