1 Ogden City Council Work Session: May 2, 2017 PRESENTATION OF LESTER PARK DESIGNS Purpose of Work Session: To receive presentations from the finalists of the Lester Park design contest Background In 2016, Ogden City, the Weber County Library Board, and the American Institute of Architecture (AIA) Young Architects held a design competition for Lester Park. The City is interested in incorporating the redesign of Lester Park into the remodel of the Ogden Main Library. Weber County recently passed a bond with the intention of improving the library system in the County. As part of that bond, the Main Library is expected to be remodeled and updated. Because the library is such an integral part of Lester Park, the park redesign was incorporated into the overall plan for the Lester Park block. Over the course of 2016, the design competition and final judging took place. The design competition was opened to all who wanted to submit a design plan and public input was taken to get a better idea of what people in the community wanted for the park. The public input was collected, packaged, and given to the design contestants to assist them in identifying the community’s needs. The design criteria outlined included: people, place, connection, and context. The designs, once submitted, were displayed at the library and the public was encouraged to vote for the best design. A total of 12 designs were submitted. The jury reviewed the designs, and taking the public input and voting into consideration, selected the top three designs based on the criteria identified. The purpose of the Council’s work session is to review each of the top three designs. After the Council’s review, it is anticipated that the three finalists will work to incorporate elements of each design into one final design.
