Board of Canvassers Meeting: August 29, 2017 Page 1 of 2 OGDEN CITY BOARD OF CANVASSERS – AUGUST 15, 2017 PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS Certify or Not Certify the Primary Election Results “I move the printed results presented by the City Recorder be certified as the official results of the Ogden City Primary Election held August 15, 2017.” The City Council and Mayor, acting as the City Board of Canvassers, will consider certifying the municipal election results from the August 15, 2017 primary election. Board of Municipal Canvassers Section 20A, Chapter 4 of the Utah State Code sets forth the election review process, designates the legislative body – the City Council – and the Mayor as the Board of Canvassers and outlines the Board’s duties for municipal elections. The City Recorder acts as the election official. The Board of Canvassers is responsible for certifying the official election results of municipal elections. Canvassing of returns for a Primary Election must occur no sooner than seven days after the election and no later than fourteen (14) days after the election. After reviewing the returns, the Board must certify the results of the election and file a report that includes the following information: 1. The total number of votes cast in the Board’s jurisdiction; 2. The names of each candidate whose name appeared on the ballot; 3. The title of each ballot proposition that appeared on the ballot; 4. Each office that appears on the ballot; 5. From each voting precinct: a. The number of votes for each candidate; and b. The number of votes for and against each ballot proposition; 6. The total number of votes given in the Board’s jurisdiction to each candidate; 7. A statement certifying that the information contained in the report is accurate. The City Recorder will present the Canvass Report and make a recommendation for certification of the results. 1. In accordance with state law it is necessary to conduct a canvass to examine the election returns at the usual meeting place of the municipal legislative body no sooner than seven days and no later than fourteen days after the date of the election. The Board of Canvassers consists of the municipal legislative body and the mayor. They are charged with declaring the candidate with the highest number of votes as “nominated” and certifying the vote totals for each candidate. The City Recorder shall prepare a report of the results which shall contain: 1. The total number of votes cast; 2. The name of each candidate who appeared on the ballot; 3. Each office that appeared on the ballot; 4. The number of votes for each candidate from each voting precinct; 5. The total number of votes given to each candidate; 6. The number of ballots that were rejected; and 7. A statement certifying that the information contained in the report is accurate. The Board of Canvassers and City Recorder shall review the report to ensure it is correct then sign and file the report as the official record.
