Page 1 of 1 Ogden City Council Meeting: May 2, 2017 JOINT PROCLAMATION DECLARING MAY 2017 AS “HISTORIC PRESERVATION MONTH” IN OGDEN CITY Action: Adopt joint proclamation Summary This joint proclamation declares May 2017 as “Historic Preservation Month” in Ogden City. Ogden City planning staff will be present to accept this joint proclamation. Council Staff Contact: Brittany Griffin, (801)629-8103 ---PAGE BREAK--- OF THE GDEN CITY COUNCIL AND MAYORMAYOR DECLARING MAY 2017 “HISTORIC PRESERVATION MONTH” IN OGDEN CITY WHEREAS, Ogden City boasts a rich heritage and historic character that is nationally recognized. Historic preservation is a valuable tool that helps to maintain our community character, foster local pride, revitalize neighborhoods, and enhance overall livability; and WHEREAS, Ogden's history can be experienced today in the many structures listed on local and national historic registers. These buildings are of varied style and unique design, ranging from Miles Goodyear's cabin of 1847 to many homes constructed during lucrative days of the trans-continental railroad. It is important to celebrate the role of history in our lives and the contributions made by individuals dedicated to preserving the tangible characteristics of the heritage that has shaped us as a people; and WHEREAS, The Ogden Landmarks Commission works to preserve Ogden’s historic character through the architecture, construction, development, and maintenance of structures, sites, and areas that are historically significant. The Landmarks Commission is a Certified Local Government (CLG) program, making it eligible for grants from the state; and WHEREAS, Each year, Ogden’s Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt provides an opportunity for residents to become aware of some of the unique historic and architectural designs and structures within Ogden. The scavenger hunt will run through May 17th, and the prize drawing will take place at the Weber County Heritage Foundation and Ogden City Landmarks Commission program on May 18th at the Eccles Art Center. WHEREAS, We encourage the entire Ogden community to participate in the May 2017 Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt to become more aware of the impressive historic structures, architecture, and designs throughout our community. NOW, THEREFORE, the Ogden City Council and Mayor Michael P. Caldwell hereby proclaim May 2017: “HISTORIC PRESERVATION MONTH” in Ogden City. We recognize the substantial contributions of our Planning Commission, Landmarks Commission, Planning and Community Development staff, Weber Heritage Foundation, local businesses, and residents who have worked to restore and retain the rich and historic legacy of our community.
