Wagstaff Executive Director March 22,2010 Mayor Daniel C. Snarr Murray City Corporation 5025 South State Street Murray, Utah 84107 Dear Mayor Snarr, As an elected member of the Murray City Municipal Council for the past 10 years, I have seen many wonderful changes that have enhanced the beauty, efficiency, and overall livability of this community. We have enjoyed several major developments that have located in our city, and have enhanced the quality of life for the approximately 45,000 residents of Murray City, including the construction of Intermountain Medical Center, to the Point at 53rd shopping center, the Fireclay Redevelopment area, the makeover of the Fashion Place Mall, and the annexation of over 12,000 new residents to our city. Murray is changing and growing. Even with all of these exciting additions to our city, none touches the impact of UTOPIA and bringing fiber optics to the homes and businesses of our community. While it has been a tough start-up, the potential these fiber connections bring to our city is astounding. I have witnessed, first hand, the draw this amenity is for business, education, medical and residential users alike. Businesses are so excited to have this opportunity for improving their telecommunications. The only thing that might be better is if the project reached 100% of our businesses and residents right now. When I read about the Google Experiment my first thought was that this is the exact mission we set out to accomplish when we joined the UTOPIA network. This could be the just the program we need to make this unique telecommunications dream come true for our community. I believe that we are an ideal community for this program because of the unique autonomy that we have built in Murray City. With our own city government, school district, water, storm water, power company, police, fire, ambulance, shopping mall, medical center, Boys & Girls Club, Murray Auto Row (car dealerships) and so much more, we are a totally self- sufficient city. Residents never need to leave the city for any of their needs. Imagine our students learning curve when the classroom at their fingertips is world-wide. Imagine medical diagnoses and treatment from renowned doctors a world away. Imagine residents managing their energy resources efficiently from home. Imagine Murray City diagnosing infrastructure problems more efficiently from the office than trying to find the problem by probing underground. Imagine at-risk children at the Boys & Girls Club getting the educational and job readiness help they need to be on par with the other students in their schools through the technology capabilities they are afforded by this project. Imagine all the good the Google Experiment would bring to Murray City. The Google Experiment would make a world of difference right here in this small community. I send this letter in full support of the application that Murray City is making for the Google Experiment. I can't imagine anything that would enhance our community more than this. Good luck in your endeavor to enrich the lives of our most important commodity, our residents and businesses. Krista Dunn Murray City Council Representative, District 5
