MURRAY CITY FIRE DEPARTMENT BUSINESS INSPECTION INFORMATION LETTER ACCORDING TO THE UNIFORM FIRE CODE Welcome, new business owner, to the City of Murray. To assist your start-up and help things run a little smoother, here are a few things you can do. If you are a home business doing telephone, computer or office-related work, or a mall kiosk, Murray City Code does not require inspection. All other businesses should contact us for inspection. If you are not sure about the requirements for your business, please contact our office for clarification. Your business location must be occupied and set up, ready to do business, prior to inspection. We cannot inspect empty buildings. Call the number listed below and leave the following information: Business name, Business address, telephone, and hours of operation during which we can inspect your business. Please be aware that a business license cannot be issued without necessary approvals and inspections being completed. Do not call regarding fire inspection prior to submitting your license application. We cannot process requests for inspection before license applications have been turned in. Thank you. UFC 1207.3 9 Doors must remain unlocked during business hours. FIRE EXTINGUISHERS NFPA 10 3-2 9 Minimum Rating 2A:10B:C - 1500 Square Feet Mounted and with current annual inspection tag. Maximum travel distance: 75' Class A Maximum travel distance: 50' Class B FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS UFC 1001.5.1 9 All sprinkler systems, fire hydrant systems, standpipe systems, fire alarm systems, portable fire extinguishers, smoke and heat ventilators, smoke removal systems, and other fire-protective or extinguishment systems or appliances shall be maintained in an operative condition at all times and shall be replaced or repaired when defective. NFPA 13 4-5.1.1 9 Sprinkler systems to include all rooms and areas, under stairs, and within closets. UFC 1001.6.3 9 All system valves shall be locked open, accessible and unobstructed. UFC 1001.6.3 9 Fire department connection (FDC) caps in place and swivels working freely. FDC and indicating valve painted. ---PAGE BREAK--- UFC 1103.2.2 9 Storage shall be maintained 18" below sprinkler heads, or 24" below the ceiling in non-sprinkled buildings. MECHANICAL UFC 1103.3.2.4 9 No storage of combustibles adjacent to water heaters, boiler equipment, heaters, etc. BUILDING UFC 1111.2.2 9 Fire doors must not be blocked open or obstructed, including corridors with wire glass and 20 min. rated doors. ELECTRICAL UFC 8504 9 Cover plates required on outlets, switches, and junction boxes. UFC 8506.1 9 Extension cords may not be used as a substitute for permanent wiring. UFC 8506.3 9 Extension cords and flexible cords shall not be affixed to structures, extend through walls, ceilings, floors, under doors or floor coverings. UFC 8509.2 9 Main electrical panels require a minimum clearance of 30". HOUSEKEEPING UFC 7401.6.4 9 All compressed gas cylinders in service or storage shall be secured. UFC 1103.2.2 9 Dumpsters shall not be placed within 5' of combustible walls, openings, or combustible roof eave lines (25' for schools) UFC 1103.3.2.4 9 Boiler rooms, mechanical rooms, and electrical panel rooms shall not be used for storage of combustibles. UFC 1103.3.2.5 9 No storage under stairs unless protected by 1-hour fire resistive construction (5/8" sheet rock), or fire sprinkled.
