MURRAY CITY CORPORATION Murray City Municipal Building 5025 S State Street Murray, Utah 84107-4824 JOB DESCRIPTION Title: WATER TECHNICIAN III Department: Public Works/Water Class Code: 7780 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Effective Date: August 30, 1985 (Rev. 02/2023) GENERAL PURPOSE Under the general supervision from a Water Technician IV, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the operation of light, medium, and heavy equipment and hand/power tools used in the maintenance of Murray City’s Water Distribution System. ESSENTIAL DUTIES • Repairs and replaces broken pipes, water mains, valving, fire hydrants, sample stations, fittings, meters, vaults, boxes, and other critical water infrastructure. • Operates equipment and provides skilled work during water main replacement projects; assists Water Technician IV in handling difficulties that arise. • Operates and maintains all necessary light, medium, and heavy equipment, equipment attachments, and hand/power tools. Reports complex problems to Supervisor or Fleet Supervisor for repair or replacement. • Creates and accurately inputs information into work orders, service requests, and inspection reports. Bluestakes water utility lines when necessary. • Understands and operates the valve truck equipment. Manages the program when assigned. Transfers catalogued information to GIS for updating maps. • Is familiar with and complies with all Murray City safety rules and regulations, SOPs, and specifications. • Assists Street Department crews during snow removal; operates large and small snowplows and snowblowers. • Hauls materials and equipment to and from job sites. Assists in preventative maintenance for flood control. • Maintains Murray City Water Facilities, landscape improvements, irrigation installs and repairs, concrete replacement, snow removal and all other necessary work. • Acts as a Water Technician IV in the absence of the supervisor or Water Technician IV. • Performs related duties as assigned. ---PAGE BREAK--- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience • Graduation from high school or equivalent and three years of experience as a Water Technician II in Murray City, or five years related construction experience with at least one year of experience as an Equipment Operator, or any equivalent combination of education and construction experience. Special Requirements • Must possess a State of Utah, Grade IV, Water Distribution Operator certification. • Must possess a valid Class A Utah Commercial Driver License with tanker endorsement. • Must be a certified Flag Person. • Must be forklift certified. • Must possess Competent Person Trenching and Excavation certification. • Performs duties on trouble truck and must be generally available and respond to emergency “call outs” within 30 minutes at any time of day, year-round, regardless of weather conditions. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities • Considerable knowledge of proper water works plumbing methods and techniques; equipment operating principles and procedures; considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety procedures, including equipment operations, high traffic areas, noise, excavations, and confined space entry procedures. • General knowledge of Murray City’s Water Distribution System, GIS mapping, and Cityworks software. • Considerable knowledge of mapping and data collection, using Murray City’s GPS equipment. • Skill in the operation of assigned equipment, including the loading, transporting and unloading of the equipment at various locations. • Ability to operate the valve truck in a proficient manner. • Ability to perform minor equipment maintenance and repair; ability to follow standard safety practices and procedures common to equipment operation work; ability to follow written and verbal instructions; ability to establish effective working relationships with employees and the general public. TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED • Motorized vehicles and equipment including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, backhoe, bob cat, asphalt breakers, pumps, compressors, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, radio, phone.
