Murray City Loves Fiber Why Murray is the best City to work with Google on this experiment: • 60% of our City has fiber in place! • We are UTOPIA(Utah Telecommunication Open Infrastructure Agency) partners - meaning we support building the infrastructure and allowing providers to ‘ride’ on it or offer the services (same as Google model). • We own and operate most of our own utilities including power, sewer, water, storm water. • There is an amazing medical community here who uses some of the availability, but could really expand with this opportunity. The growing number of medical complexes in the City are great outgrowths of having the Intermountain Medical Center and TOSH, the Orthopedic Specialty Hospital located here. • • Our public education partners include Murray School District and Granite School District. We have 2 high schools, 2 junior high schools and 9 elementary schools in our boundaries along with several private schools. • There are 16 colleges, universities, other educational institutions in the City. We have the largest Boys & Girls Club program in the state, housing its headquarters in Murray. It serves more than 11,000 youth per year • Families enjoy the faster download speeds to accomplish homework and work-at-home - many people have computers and want to use them to their highest potential. • We are a self-service City providing a Senior Center, Police, Fire Department, Ambulance Service, Municipal Court, Library, Golf Course, Parks, Arts and Recreation programs. • We are a urban business hub in Salt Lake County with a successful regional shopping mall and a wide variety of retail stores. • Murray has great transportation options including 2 major freeways and 3 light rail stops - we will have a platform-to-platform commuter rail stop in 2012. ---PAGE BREAK--- • Businesses want to locate here to expand their service areas with the speed and capacity they need to compete in global markets. We are currently redeveloping our downtown which will increase the number of businesses in the City as well as bring major entertainment facilities, state of the art City Hall and performing arts center, hotels, corporate office complexes, and additional retail. The concept of mixed use, transit oriented and walkable communities is at the cutting edge for development in the west side of our town, bringing major players into the downtown and Fireclay areas because of the close proximity to the medical center, public transportation, and easy access to a myriad of amenities in walking distance. • Our City is contained in tight demographics (7847 acres - 12.3 sq miles) allowing for easier installation of the fiber. • Emergency responses are enhanced with fiber loops. • Murray loves fiber – our 46,700 residents can attest to that!
