October 2014 – Mayor’s Message There are signs in the air that fall is in full swing – shorter days, lower temperatures and leaves changing colors. That means it might be time for us to consider putting away or covering up our patio furniture and sprucing up our home for fall. I certainly enjoy seeing our City full of color from the summer annuals, but the fall season also gives way to some brilliant colors prior to the white of snow. With the coming of fall, children are back in school and that should alert all of us to be more cautious when driving around our City. If you have had a chance to drive east or west bound on 5300 South, I’m sure you have noticed the Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB), or yellow flashing lights, by the new Marriott Residence Inn. This was installed last winter. are warning signs at intersections or mid-block crosswalks. They are activated as pedestrians push a button when wanting to enter into a crosswalk. When the lights are flashing, traffic is to stop and yield to pedestrians. There are two others in the City – one on Bullion Street at the Jordan River Parkway Trail and a flashing yellow pedestrian signal on Cottonwood Street by Intermountain Hospital Center (IHC). In studies that have been conducted, the high intensity rapid flashing yellow lights achieve nearly the same effect as red/stop lights. I would encourage you to be aware of these areas and watch for the blinking yellow lights, watch for school children and yield to pedestrians. Yard cleanup is another thing that comes with fall. As a reminder of city services for those served by Murray City:  Green-waste trailer - The cost is $40 for two days (three days if you need it over a weekend). This is for yard waste only. Please contact the Public Services Department at [PHONE REDACTED] for reservations.  30-Yard Roll-off Dumpster – The cost is $200 for two days (three days on weekends). This type of dumpster can be used for most other debris, with a few exceptions including hazardous materials. Please contact the Public Services Department at [PHONE REDACTED] for additional questions.  Bagged leaves can be dropped off at Murray Park in the parking lot between the Parks & Recreation office and the Park Center starting on October 27 through December 7. I would like to mention one other issue - I know it cannot be missed as you are driving through our city and see all the political signs for candidates running for office, but Election Day is approaching quickly. I’d like to encourage you take time to study the candidates, consider their views on City issues and then take time to vote. Although the official voting date is not until November 4, I know many of you have chosen to vote by mail and will be voting soon. This form of public expression and input is essential to our form of government. We honor those who have sacrificed so much to give us this privilege. I hope you have enjoyed a wonderful summer, and look forward as I do, to the exciting changes and opportunities of a new season. Sincerely, Ted Eyre, Mayor
