Mayor’s Message June 2013 Summer has come to Murray City! There is something about the warm weather, long days and cool evenings that make me wish it could go on and on. So many wonderful events take place in our City in the next few months. We enjoy the Aquatics Center, walking or biking along the Jordan River Trail, playing a round of golf at Murray Parkway Golf Course, or participating in a sporting event in the parks. It is a time to gather at the pavilions for family reunions or watch a spectacular outdoor production at Murray amphitheater. When you are planning activities, please take advantage of some of these great opportunities right here at home. I hope you will indulge me in a little more reminiscing about the activities we have enjoyed and participated in through the years. 2003 was a very memorable year for all of us. We celebrated the centennial of the City. I love the history of Murray City. It was a town born out of necessity to provide living quarters for the workers in the smelter industry and farmers on the outskirts of the big city. Murray residents provided for themselves by bringing water from McGhie Springs at considerable sacrifice. A few years later, they created a power company which is celebrating its centennial this year. This ‘can do’ attitude of the early settlers continues today as we strive to provide the best possible services to you with our talented City employees. We all participated in watching Murray High School being rebuilt and celebrated the opening of the new school in 2003. The Murray School District continues to look at making improvements and is again following this process rebuilding Hillcrest Junior High. The annexations of 2002 brought new relationships with the Granite School District as Cottonwood High, Woodstock and Twin Peaks Elementary schools became part of our City. It has been my pleasure to spend time in all of the schools as they have invited me to participate in many of their special events. Costco opened in 2003 next to the construction site of the Intermountain Medical Center. Like many of the businesses in the City, Costco has become a local favorite and a draw for many around the valley. The construction on this site of the Costco store and the hospitals marked the end of the enormous effort to clean up and reclaim this important corner in Murray. It is home to a new landmark in the valley replacing the chimneys that once stood there. As you enjoy the summer activities, celebrate with me the many wonderful transformations that have taken place over the years. These changes have added life and vitality to our City, preparing us for the next 100 years.
