A JOINT RESOLUTION OF MAYOR DANIEL C. SNARR AND MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF MURRAY CITY, UTAH IN SUPPORT AND RECOGNITION OF SEPTEMBER 2006 AS NATIONAL PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH AND OCTOBER 2006 AS NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH WHEREAS, September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; and WHEREAS, In the United States in the year 2006 approximately 233,000 men will learn they have prostate cancer, as it is the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer in men, and approximately 30,350 men will lose their lives to this disease, with one in six men being at risk of developing prostate cancer during his lifetime; and WHEREAS, almost 212,000 new cases of female breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2006 and over 40,500 will die from the disease this year; and WHEREAS, almost 1,700 new cases of male breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2006 and close to 475 will die of this disease; and WHEREAS, for the first time in the U.S. breast cancer became the leading cause of death even over heart disease, and WHEREAS, research suggests that men could reduce their risk of prostate cancer mortality if they followed recommended prostate cancer screening guidelines, including examination by a health care provider and increased awareness and use of early detection practices; and WHEREAS, mammography is recognized as the single most effective method of detecting breast changes, promoting early detection and prompt treatment to reduce suffering and death caused by Breast Cancer; and NOW, THEREFORE, WE, the Mayor and Municipal Council of Murray City...the “Best City in America!” do hereby resolve to support and recognize September 2006 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and October 2006 as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and encourage all Murray City employees and residents to resolve to be aware of the signs of cancer and know what to do in taking preventive steps in assuring good health and fitness in the battle against cancer. We CAN do better!...We CAN Win! PASSED, APPROVED AND ADOPTED this 19th day of September, 2006.
