MURRAY CITY CORPORATION Murray City Municipal Building 5025 S State Street Murray, Utah 84107-4824 JOB DESCRIPTION Title: WATER DISTRIBUTION TECHNICIAN Department: Public Works/Water Class Code: 3450 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Effective Date: July 1, 1982 (Rev. 10/2021) GENERAL PURPOSE Under general supervision from the Water Distribution Supervisor, performs technical work monitoring the water distribution system by means of our SCADA system; maintains storage reservoir levels, proper flow and pressure in the system; maintains and enforces current backflow and cross connection regulations; reads, installs and repairs commercial, residential and pump station meters; reviews and approves plans for water system changes or additions; inspects water line installations and locates water lines as per Blue Stake One Call requirements. ESSENTIAL DUTIES • Routinely checks functions of all well and spring operations, i.e. head pressures, line pressure, sand separators, pressure recorders and pump station operations. Performs preventative maintenance on pumps, including electronic metering pumps and motors as necessary, including, but not limited to, changing chlorine tanks, mineral oils and turbine oils. • Prepares and maintains essential data and files required for our yearly report and data necessary to maintain proper operations of the water system, i.e. daily chlorine use, chlorine residuals, daily hydrofluorosilicic acid use and calculated dosage rates in the water system, well depths and total water pumped, water meters installed, trouble calls, blue stake requests, power costs, backflow devices on file, water main breaks, meter valves replaced and the total footage of new water mains added to the system; completes and yearly reports as required. • Performs routine sampling for bacteriological analysis including fluoride content, radiological, pesticide, chemical analysis, lead and copper, trihalomethanes, chlorine residuals, pH, temperature and conductivity. • Locates water lines per our Blue Stake call center requirements. • Coordinates with Murray City GIS department to ensure the maps are correct and the data has been input correctly. • Reviews and approves submitted plans for any water system changes or additions. Performs inspections and completes the necessary forms for the inspections of all water mains, service lines, meter boxes and fire lines. • Checks and maintains all electrical, fiber optics, SCADA, telemetering and telephone equipment associated with the water system. • Assists in developing, maintaining, and enforcing a City-wide cross connection control program; creates and maintains files on each device within the City; performs inspections and testing according to the City ordinance. ---PAGE BREAK--- • Performs specialized work involving installation, maintenance, repair, inspection and testing of water meters, backflow prevention devices, regulating valves, well and booster pump equipment. • Maintains records on each of Murray City's water supply locations. • Responds to trouble calls from Water, Sewer, Streets, Power, Police and Fire Dispatch; assists water, streets and sewer crews as needed. • Supervises seasonal workers in the maintenance of the water and sewer department's properties. • Performs related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience • Graduation from high school and three years’ experience in the water industry with some experience in water line maintenance, water line locations and operation of a SCADA system or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirements • Must possess a valid Utah Commercial Driver License. • Must possess Class IV Water Certification within six months of hire. • Must possess a Class II Cross Connection and Backflow Tech certification within six months of hire. • Performs duties on trouble truck and must be generally available and respond within thirty (30) minutes to emergency "call outs" at any time of day, year-round, regardless of weather conditions. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities • Job requires knowledge and understanding of how culinary water systems function and operate, basic knowledge of electricity and instrumentation and must have skills in troubleshooting problems with automatic valves and switches. • Must possess the ability to read grade stakes. • Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. • Must be able to gather and report accurate, detailed information pertaining to the water system. TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED • Motorized vehicles and equipment including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, pumps, compressors, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, radio, phone, ditch witch, air purifying respirator, full body protection suit, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus backflow assembly test kit, well sounder and line locator.
