Mayor’s Message March 2012 The annual session of the Utah Legislature has just come to a close. It has been part of the focus of the City as various bills were discussed that could impact how things are done in our City. I always appreciate the time and energy our local legislators give during this process. They are accessible to us and work to help us address the concerns we have. During the session we meet at least weekly with them, Salt Lake County officials and other community representatives from around the valley. It is a great opportunity to focus our efforts and accomplish important initiatives. My special thanks to those who represent Murray City and the work they do for us. When the Census data is gathered each decade, it often shows shifts in population. That movement requires boundary adjustments for some of the representatives who serve you. You have probably seen the work done to change the Legislative boundaries. Those will go into effect next year after the election cycle in the fall. It may mean changes to who your representatives will be for the next legislative session. The population movement also requires the City Council to adjust some of the districts and areas they represent. They will be working on these boundaries in the next month or two. You can participate as public hearings are held to review their recommendations. The Council also has the responsibility to make adjustments for the Murray School Board districts. Those proposed changes will also be considered as part of the public hearings. I hope you will participate in these meetings. The boundaries will be moved after the next elections of both groups. Since Murray is largely built out, there are not usually sweeping changes, but sometimes to make the numbers work they may impact more residents. It is an honor to serve with the other elected officials. I appreciate the talents they have that provide balance to ideas and programs. The focus for them is generally a desire to assist residents to have the best quality of life possible. There are always improvements to be made. Finally, I would like to offer a note of congratulations to the Murray City Library. They are celebrating 100 years of service to our community. What a wonderful resource they provide as they continue to evolve to meet educational demands. Visit the Library and wish them a Happy Birthday!
