MURRAY CITY CORPORATION JOB DESCRIPTION Title: UTILITY ARBORIST Department: Power Class Code: 7100 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Effective Date: July 1, 1982 (Rev. 03/2025) GENERAL PURPOSE Under general supervision of the Forestry Supervisor and immediate supervision of the Forestry Crew Supervisor, performs skilled arborist work. ESSENTIAL DUTIES • Inspects trucks, tools and equipment used in forestry and ground maintenance, for safe condition and efficient operation, and reports necessary repairs. • Prunes, removes, and maintains trees and vegetation from conflict with overhead power lines and structures. Works around energized conductors to maintain and clear utility rights-of-way. Manually loads trucks with logs and other materials; cleans work areas; feeds brush chipper. • Operates bucket trucks and other equipment around energized lines, climbs trees, operates chain saws, chipper, stump grinder, dump trucks, hydraulic pruning tools, snowplows, backhoe, etc. • Plants, prunes, and maintains City street trees and City park trees. • Fills in for the Forestry Crew Supervisor as assigned. • Participates in the instruction and training of apprentice utility arborists in all phases of Forestry Division work assignments. • Responds to after hour emergency call outs, particularly for work on tree-related problems. • Performs snow removal and landscaping duties as assigned. • Performs other duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience • Graduation from high school plus successful completion of the Utah Arborist Apprenticeship Program (or equivalent), plus two years of experience as a fully trained arborist involved in “hands-on” work in a comprehensive urban and/or utility forestry program. Two years of work experience in an urban and/or utility forestry program may be substituted for the apprenticeship requirement. ---PAGE BREAK--- Special Requirements • Must possess a valid Utah Commercial Driver License (CDL). • Must be on-call several times per year, for a period of seven days each rotation, as determined by an assignment schedule adopted by the Department; must be on-site within 30 minutes of being called in. • Must possess, or be able to obtain during first twelve (12) months of employment, a current non- commercial Pesticide Applicator License from the State of Utah Department of Agriculture. • Qualified applicants must pass a practical climbing skills evaluation. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities • Working knowledge of the objectives of the Murray City Forestry Program; working knowledge of various types of trees; working knowledge of tree planting, pruning, climbing, tree felling and removal techniques, working knowledge of the hazards and safety practices associated with utility line clearance work. • Ability to perform strenuous physical activity; ability to work outside year round; ability to climb and work at heights of up to 100 feet without undue discomfort; ability to utilize safety procedures; ability to communicate both verbally and in writing. TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED • Motorized vehicles and equipment including pickup, dump truck, aerial bucket truck, digger derrick, backhoe, pole climbing equipment, wire cutters, chain saw, tree climbing equipment, rigging equipment, ropes and various hand tools, and other equipment pertaining to this position. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to meet DOT hearing standard requirements.
