PROCLAMATION WHEREAS: Recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world, has resulted in a Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations; and WHEREAS: Member States of the United Nations pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms; and WHEREAS: Over 400,000 people have died in the Darfur region of Sudan in the past three years as subjects of ethnic genocide and millions of people have been enslaved and/or displaced from their homes; and WHEREAS: UNICEF reports an estimated 2.5 million people in Darfur, most of them children, are suffering from malnutrition and receiving little or no assistance; and WHEREAS: International response to this crisis has, to date, been inadequate and inefficient; and WHEREAS: The Darfur Relief Association of Moscow (DREAM) is attempting to call local attention to this crisis through cooperation and support of the University of Idaho African Students Association, Amnesty International, the Black Student Union, Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship, the Human Rights Compliance Office of the University of Idaho, The Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, The Muslim Students Association, The Moscow Interfaith Association, The Moscow Christian Life Center, the Palouse Peace Coalition, STAND (Students Taking Action Now Darfur) at Washington State University, the U of I Core, Political Science, and Sociology Departments, the Universal Unitarian Church of the Palouse, the Moscow City Human Rights Commission, and other sponsors and supporters; and WHEREAS: DREAM and its sponsors and supporters are hosting free showings of the documentary film, “Darfur Diaries: Message From Home,” followed by panel discussions, at 4 and 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 2nd, 2006 on the University of Idaho campus. NOW THEREFORE, I The Mayor of Moscow, Idaho hereby proclaim Thursday, March 2nd, 2006 as “Darfur Genocide Awareness Day” and commends DREAM and its sponsors and supporters for their efforts in this cause.
