PANCREATIC CANCER AWARENESS WEEK PROCLAMATION WHEREAS: In 2012, almost 44,000 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States and more than 37,000 will die from that disease; and WHEREAS: Approximately 190 of those deaths will occur in Idaho; and WHEREAS: 74 percent of pancreatic cancer patients die within one year of their diagnosis, and 94 percent die within five years; and WHEREAS: The survival rate has not changed significantly in nearly 40 years; and WHEREAS: Funding for pancreatic cancer research is reportedly just two percent of the National Cancer Institute’s federal research funding; and WHEREAS: The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network was founded in 1999 to advance research, influence policy, support patients, create hope, and increase public awareness about treatments and a cure; and WHEREAS: That nationwide nonprofit organization includes a North Idaho Affiliate to help advocate for those causes; and WHEREAS: Awareness is the first step toward advancing research and improving funding to identify causes and facilitate prevention, early detection, effective treatment, and a cure for this disease; NOW THEREFORE, I, Nancy Chaney, Mayor of the City of Moscow, do hereby proclaim November 19-24, 2012 to be PANCREATIC CANCER AWARENESS WEEK and urge all citizens to become more aware of pancreatic cancer and to support scientific efforts to identify effective treatments and a cure for that disease.
