PULMONARY HYPERTENSION AWARENESS MONTH PROCLAMATION WHEREAS: The health of our community's people is the foundation for a caring and productive society, and our future rests with our ability to find cures for, and adequately treat individuals who are afflicted with a variety of illnesses including pulmonary arterial hypertension, also called pulmonary hypertension; and WHEREAS: Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a rare disorder causing intolerable blood pressure levels in the arteries between the lungs and heart. Historically, it has been chronic and incurable with a poor survival rate; and WHEREAS: Early diagnosis can lead to early treatment and the possibility of improved quality of life and prolonged life; and WHEREAS: Education can help with early diagnosis and funding for research can help find a cure; and WHEREAS: The Pulmonary Hypertension Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for those with pulmonary hypertension through education and awareness and through research, member services and patient and family support; and WHEREAS: The Inland Northwest Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension Support Group conducts meetings throughout Western Montana, Northern Idaho and Eastern Washington to assist patients, the medical community and those interested in the care and support of those afflicted with this terminal disease; and WHEREAS: Moscow residents are among those who have been diagnosed with this condition; and WHEREAS: Medical personnel continue to improve the accuracy and promptness of diagnosis of pulmonary arterial hypertension. NOW THEREFORE, I, Nancy Chaney, Mayor of the City of Moscow, do hereby proclaim November 2009 to be PULMONARY HYPERTENSION AWARENESS MONTH and urge all the citizens of the City of Moscow to recognize the seriousness of this disease, the urgency of accurate and prompt diagnosis, and the meritorious work of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association to find a cure.
