University of Idaho University of Idaho University of Idaho University of Idaho Student Employ Student Employ Student Employ Student Employment ment ment ment Week Week Week Week WHEREAS, Each year, colleges and universities across the country set aside a special week to recognize the importance of the student work experience; and WHEREAS, An educated workforce contributes to a more prepared, productive, and prosperous society; and WHEREAS, Attracting and retaining students in higher education is critical to the future of our community, state, nation, and world; and WHEREAS, In 2009, the median annual income of university graduates with bachelor’s degrees was more than $20,000 above that of those with only high school diplomas; and WHEREAS, The work-life earnings of high school-only graduates is estimated at almost $2M less than for those with master’s degrees; and WHEREAS, In 2009, the average unemployment rate among people holding bachelor’s degrees was less than half that of those with only high school diplomas; and WHEREAS, Employment helps students stay in school, and may afford practical application of their classroom education, including through service learning; and WHEREAS, Student employees benefit both public and private sectors in the city of Moscow, and add vibrancy to our community; and WHEREAS, the City of Moscow supports employment opportunities for students, and promotes job creation for graduates; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Nancy Chaney, Mayor for the City of Moscow, do hereby proclaim April 10-16, 2011, as Student Employment Week in the City of Moscow, and call upon all residents to join with the University of Idaho and Washington State University in observing this occasion and recognizing the reliability, initiative, and unique contributions of student employees.
