RESOLUTION NO. 2004-07 CITY OF MOSCOW, IDAHO WHEREAS the University of Idaho is Idaho's premier institution of higher education, serving the people of the state through its comprehensive education programs, its distinguished research, and its extensive outreach and service programs; and WHEREAS the University of Idaho serves thousands of people around the State of Idaho m many capacities but finds its principal place of operation and home in Moscow, Idaho; and WHEREAS financial difftculties are forcing the University to consider difficult and painful choices in its budgeting decisions; and WHEREAS students, staff and faculty are concerned that the mission of the University, its very essence, may be compromised by precipitous financial decisions; and WHEREAS the citizens of Moscow have benefited greatly from the close relationship between the City and the University, from the economic impact of the University, its students and programs, from the intellectual, cultural and artistic resources of the University that have allowed Moscow to proudly call itself "the heart of the arts," and from the forward thinking and progressive stance that University administrations have taken in the creative and intellectual life of Moscow and Idaho; and WHEREAS the people of the City of Moscow, along with the Mayor and City Council, wish to officially register their support for their beloved University of Idaho and support for the work of the talented educators, researchers, students and staff in pursuing beliefs and ideals that we hold dear as citizens and government; and WHEREAS the Mayor and Council of the City of Moscow wish to place on record our support and encouragement to the University community and all of its representatives at this time of challenge, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED AS FOLLOWS: The people of the City of Moscow extend their deepest concern to the University for the faculty, staff, and students who are adversely affected by budget decisions, for the continued existence of programs essential to the identity of the University such as the studio arts program in fine arts, for the excellence of the programs offered across the curriculum for undergraduate and graduate students in all fields and for the affordability of quality higher education for all Idahoans. The Mayor and Council of the City of Moscow ask that the University Administration undertake these difficult decisions with maximum attention to preservation of the core values of quality higher education for all students, with maximum involvement and concern for its faculty and staff, and with an open collaborative process dedicated to bringing together the substantial resources and creativity of the University community to chart the future course of one of the oldest and most important institutions of the State of Idaho. This message shall be transmitted to the Gary Michael, Interim President, University of Idaho, and Tim White, President-Designate, University of Idaho.
